OP didn't state location, and posters say it matters. I'll throw out another. In CA, we can buy "Diesel HPR" which is a renewable made from ag waste, like fish oil. Currently imported from Singapore. Works in any diesel. Mine seems to run smoother on it and lets me stick up my nose when fussy moms and old hippies comment on my "dirty diesel" and reply that I run cleaner than a Tesla. Probably less value today under the new POTUS since polluting is fashionably American again.

The only reason renewable diesel is available in California is because CARB is has a waiver from the EPA to set its own air quality rules and create a market for renewable diesel. That's all going away soon. Enjoy it while it lasts.

I can't speak for other parts of the country, though I would guess it's pretty much the same everywhere, but here in San Diego all our fuel, regardless of brand, comes from a single refinery in LA. It comes through a single pipeline and and is stored at and distributed from a single fuel farm. In the case of gas, the only difference between brands is the various additives that are added when a tanker is dispatched to a branded station. Ironically, the additives are more for "marking" to prevent a branded station from selling excess inventory to an independent....of course marketing and differentiation is a consideration as well. Gasoline, diesel, jet fuel all come through the same pipeline and are separated by a "plug" to prevent mixing. There are other pipelines that connect to large users with their own fuel farms such as Lindbergh Field, North Island (ships and aircraft), MCAS Miramar...

I go to Speedway out by I-70 and have for the 20 years I've been driving diesels, the tanks turn over quickly and you get winterized blend when winter starts instead of a month later.

Around here, it's hard not to buy Speedway, they are everywhere, just like CVS, RiteAid and those pharmacy places popped up on every corner 15 years ago. i have to drive a half hour to see a Shell station. Not even sure where the nearest BP is, that closed years ago. No Quik Trips up here.

The town closest to me is 5,000 people. There was a rundown Speedway uptown next to 70 forever and then a big, nice SuperAmerica was built on the other side of 70. Speedway bought Superamerica and redid the new SA to make it a Speedway.

Then they tore down original Speedway and built a brand new one on the same lot, a slingshot across 70 from the other new Speedway/SA they just rebuilt.

So anyway, for the reasons mentioned above, Speedway is where I have always gotten diesel and I've always added power service winter or summer blend to every tank. Never have been stranded by fuel gelling, even when my poor little diesel Rabbit sat at the airport for weeks in the winter back when I traveled.

Where I buy my diesel in winter at the co-op they say it is good to -25, as they supply the school system their fuel for the busses. I have never seen -25 but have not had a problem at -15 with gelled fuel.

Fish oil based diesel fuel stock took out so many injection pumps in eastern Canada. They stopped retailing it. This was years ago now.

Still I would stay away from the stuff. Some conventional diesel fuel when I really was driving diesels every day gave poor milage.

You have to find out what refinery is selling to what chains of service station outlets. Although I suspect the chances of getting this low milage fuel is not going to happen at truck stops.

The poor milage diesel fuel refinery may have been producing winter fuel all year long for all I know. It also may have not been a widespread issue. What was obvious is I dropped at least five miles per gallon or perhaps even as high as ten miles per gallon.

When using it in the old indirect injection volkswagon diesel engines.

I live near Fredericksburg Va. We have a Southern States Distribution center that sells 50 cetane diesel. That's what I fill up with. Usually add half a quart of marine 2 stroke oil from walmart. I have a NA 300D, the 50 cetane nets me about 2 mpg better and it seems to idle and run smoother.

I buy Shell. It has 5% Biodiesel. 25 mpg local driving.
