What could have failed? Many possibilities, but I'd vote for a conspiracy between bad internal seals/low pressure, worn friction surfaces, and possibly a weak pump. Could be as much as everything, or as little as bad control pressure regulation.

My Latest Issue
This is a '93 300D and most everything I read suggested that the transmission was different than the '90-92 models.
The replacement transmission came from a '92 and had according to the salvage yard 120K on it. My latest issue is that I can't downshift. I can start out in 2 and 3 and it will stay there but when I am going down the road and try to downshift to save my brakes or on a steep downhill before a red light it just goes into neutral. What would cause that?

Not sure if this is what you mean.

Well, apparently I was going too fast for it to engage the lower gears.
I tried it at lower speeds this evening and it did in fact downshift when I moved the shift lever down. I guess my old transmission was so worn or otherwise defective that it would let me downshift manually at higher speeds. I don't know. I am really liking having a functional transmission now even if it does whine/howl a little.
