300D 2.5 Shift Points

I may have drag raced the 1992 300D 2.5 yesterday... Its time was pretty depressing but the whole track loved it.

Regardless, I noticed that at WOT the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts both happened around like 4,700 rpms. Can these motors rev all the way to 6,000? Are my shift cables out of adjustment.

It ran a 20.8 at something low, then it ran a 19.8 @ 66mph. IIRC the factory 0-60 time was 12.8. 7 seconds to gain 6mph wasn't the case, I have a feeling the 0-60 is pretty slow. My guestimate was around a 17 second quarter mile.

Filters are all new. Car runs fabulously and gets great mpg. I think its the shift points.

Is the '92 a 300D 2,5 without turbo? 90 something HP ?

Or is it 2,5 turbo? 120 something HP ?

92 300D came with turbo. have you switch from the computer controlled actuator to the pressure controlled one. If the EDS Computer detects any fault it cuts signal that controls the boost/turbo.
Here's the Thread to read: Wastegate actuator swap for OM602.962?

It's about $100 fix, makes the car much better. You'll think it is a different vehicle. (I drank the cool-aid)

The '92 is the OM602 turbo.

Did you try shfting manually? For the 1-2 shift, move forward one click to shift, pull back into 2.

I believe that 6000 is not only too high for a stock 602, but the governor will not let you rev nearly that high (5100 IIRC).

From what I understand 12-13 sec if the turbo is working. 18+ if the turbo isn't working. (1992 300D 124.128 OM602.962)

My 190D 2.5T shifts at 4700 as well under full throttle. If you notice on the speedo there are small dots that indicate the shift points for a given speed. (at least on my car)

In fairness frodeS is from Norway, where a 250D exists.

Okay I'll put a wastegate swap on the back burner. The car runs too darn well to tear into it when my 603 is also apart. This car is slow but reliable, my 603 is much faster but runs for shorter periods of time. I'll hold off on the wastegate swap.

Does the 603 rev higher than the 602? I think I've seen over 5k in my 603 before.

Thanks for the replies guys!

They are supposed to shift at the same point and have the same limit, but over the years, this may change some.

When in the army, I drove some kind of tracked wehicle with the army spec OM603 turbo. The heads were hevily modified to withstand the high load, but this vehicles revved 6500 RPMS easy (yes, six thousand five houndred).
You can modify the injection pump for higher revs, but needless to say, at you own risk :-)

In euro spec, the models are a little easier to understand.

200D = 4-door, 2-liter diesel 72 bhp
200TD = 5-door, 2-liter diesel 72 bhp
250D = 4-door, 2,5-liter diesel 90/95 bhp
250TD = 5-door, 2,5-liter diesel 90/95 bhp
250D Turbo (DT) = 4-door, 2,5-liter diesel turbo 126 bhp
250TD Turbo (TDT)= 5-door, 2,5-liter diesel turbo 126 bhp (sold in Italy only)
300D = 4-door, 3-liter diesel 109-113 bhp
300TD = 5-door, 3-liter diesel 109-113 bhp
300D Turbo (DT) = 4-door, 3-liter diesel turbo 147 bhp
300TD Turbo (TDT)= 5-door, 3-liter diesel turbo 147 bhp

The same goes for the petrol engines, where a 200E is 2,0-litre, 230E is 2,3, 320E is the 3,2-litre and so on.

All this changed slightly with the 1994 models, where the name e-class was introduced, and the model names all started with an E. Still, the 2,0 would be E200 etc.

Regarding the shift point, have a look in the speedo, you'll find 1 dot where first gear end, 2 dots where 2nd gear end and 3 dots where 3rd gear end. 4700 rpms sound spot on.

FrodeS,
In other parts of the world they use the same numbering system as Europe.
The USA gets the unusual number system.
