Bowden Cable / Late Shift

Can someone let me know 1.) is there a "bowden cable" on the 79 SD, and 2.) wher exactly does it reside?
I'd like to see if I there is slack to be adjusted out of the cable. She is shifting a bit late.
Also, does anyone know the measurement (length) of the exposed pin on the original rack pin for the 617 engine? I am not getting any results from adjustments and presume that pin is worn too far down to reach the rack. ???
