I have a straight exhaust, not sure about behind the rear tire; but out the back where it normally would go, works very well. Its moderately loud, primarily if you are using 100% throttle. I enjoy mine, can blast soot onto other cars. Perfect for tailgaters.

Currently I'm in the middle of replacing my Toyota gasser with an om617 - toyota fj40 landcruiser.
I believe some of you may familiar w/Luke's kit (4x4 labs)?

Replacing a motor provides some opportunities, so I'm also going fj60 axles (3" wider), and finally going power-steering

Routing out the back sounds more passenger-friendly then behind the front tire

Found someone w/a om617 in a jeep w/straight exhaust, going to check it out next friday.

I've done it.. you'll wake the neighbors, but it sounds good.
But if you run a full length of pipe with a perforated resonance chamber it'll be just as free, and you won't scare children.

I saw a W123 riding around here last week. It was painted in Jungle Camo and had a straight pipe coming off the turbo and out a hole in the hood. I wish I would have had a camera with me....

Cool looking rig in its own way. I would never want to own it or drive it. Still interesting to look at.

They do get loud. Mine still has the muffler underneath. But, I cut out the resonator at the rear and just ran a piece of pipe with a turn down on it. It is fine until about 65 MPH. Then it starts to drone. I am having an new resonator put on in a couple weeks.

1985 300D (SOLD)

I cobbled one on W123 using the "dual resonator" from
a 300SD, and eliminating the muffler segment. The 300SD I was scrapping
already had this setup so all I had to do was alter and hang it. Here's

As far as noise goes -- this is Milwaukee, where "loud" is 20db higher than
almost any other city on the planet -- it was an acceptable "rumble".
Didn't even raise eyebrows in California.

The noise sort of wore on me for the several hundred miles I put on the car.
A "5 cylinder drone" if you're familiar with that. Like an Audi in need of a muffler.
Not a pretty sound. Not as bad as a 4 cylinder, and definitely not
as gnarly as a 4" boomer on a Honda Civic.

Go for it. go straight exhaust from the Turbo all the way out the back, or exit just in front of the left rear wheel. Side exit is cool. going out the left side, you can see your exhaust from the mirror.

Note: The turbo acts as a muffler. no comparison can be made to straight exhaust on an N/A vehicle. I plan to straight exhaust one of our TDs.

That's a waste - shoot it right through the bonnet (hood) much classier that way.

Before I dies, I want one of my MB diesel cars to straight-pipe it 2' right out the right side of the bonnet. I want to see that black smoke/exhaust, and NOT just in my rear view mirror! These things have tractor/industrial-grade diesel engines in 'em - they might as well look the part, is how I sees it.....

Yeah, I'm hardcore diesel - 100% for over 1/3 of my life now.....

Scaring children is a useful feature of the straight pipe! Keeps them out of the street!

my exhaust just broke off my 240D yesterday, talk about loud. It was an aftermarket cheaper by previous owner. no way to carry it home so left next to the guardrail.

Yes the turbo will help a lot, but the drone will get to you if used for long trips. straight pipe to the rear or at least a straight through muffler would be better.
