I think I've found the temp gauge problem 87 300D

now how do I fix it?

I have a parts car 93, and I think I can pull the conductors over to the connector from it, but it's a lot of wires, and they appear to be crimped together with steel clips.
has anyone done this?

Doesn't the plastic shell come apart and you would just transfer the female connectors to a new and better condition shell then?

You just need to disconnect the battery, make a schematic diagram as you remove each connector noting it's color code and position, then remove the mass of wires from the old connector rear shell if that isn't usable and if if is usable just put everything in the correct position in the front shell and snap both sections of the plastic shell together.

P. S. dont forget to remove the broken off plastic key if it's still stuck in the cluster!

Do you have the plastic piece that broke off? Can you epoxy it back on? I think it just aligns the plug.

nope. nothing in the cluster connector. I'm thinking the cluster is not original...
it shows over 300K on the clock, I wonder how many miles are ACTUALLY on the car...

Looks like about 2/5th of the front connector shell is broken though, that makes it harder to get the plug on the cluster, and in the 124 chassis there is precious little room to get that done as it is. That's probably what happened, someone in the past had the cluster out and was yanking on it with the plug still attached.

not only is the plastic broken through in places, the connectors are stretched out on many of them. I pinched them closed as well as swapped over the cover.
YESS! the round connector on cluster is replaceable
got it all apart, and saw TONS of gouge marks on the sides of the cluster where some ID10T was trying to pull with a coat hanger. really a beat up cluster. the 93 parts car had approximately same mileage, and was in MUCH better condition, so I swapped them.
only thing that didn't swap was the outside temp readout, and it was broken anyway...
I'll pull one from a 126 or go through the spares I have already and swap over the LCD... someday.
anywho...
I gots the color code pinout if anybody wants it I'll post it.

i took one of those apart by 'accident' once. it's not rocket surgery but getting the housing back together and all the wires in the right spots is not easy. do-able but not easy.

it's a round 15 pin connector, but two numbers get shaved off the connector and cannot be read, but they are easy to see.
the numbers are on the inside, and 3 of them are duplicated on the outside, which is handy when you get close with pushing the pins in.
and yeah, if you are color blind you'll need someone who isn't...
1 is solid brown
2 solid green
3 Blue with black stripe
4 blue with green stripe
5 brown with black stripe
6 black with purple stripe and red hash marks
7 white (or whiteish on older cars...)
8 pink with red stripe
9 solid blue
10 Brown with red stripe some cars have TWO wires soldered together, but both are same color
11 brown with white stripe (also 2 wires)
12 brown with yellow stripe
13 gray with purple stripe (also 2 wires)
14 black with white stripe
15 black with green stripe.
