Adsit has rebuilt 126 617 convertors for about $265. Craig had very good luck with them.

Post Too Bad

You're so far away as here in So. Cal. there's lots of places to sell you a rebuilt or at least back-flushed & cleaned out one for less....

*DO* give any used one you get , the sniff test before installing it ~ if it smells burned in the opening , it is and it'll damage your good tranny .

Back flushing a good used TC is usually $50.00 or so .

The trans will not move in forward or reverse gears, the fluid is clean and red, and no metal in the pan. The trans has already been removed, if my understanding is correct. Aside from checking basics, like shifter linkage, a
line pressure test would have been telling of the overall hydraulic circuit condition in all gears while it was still in the car. He stated the TC ears are not sheared off, so the pump is being turned (he also stated that he pulled the cooler lines and started it up - of course fluid was being pumped out). How many of you have seen a TC come apart internally? I have seen a few, but not MB - but it is the same theory. If there is a massive internal hydraulic circuit leak, line pressure would tank and cause inadequate clutch piston application. What do you all think?

Ah, I didnt realise that your car would not move under its own power at all....

This tends to suggest to me that there is summit wrong in the Trans itself--rather than the Converter--Not that a completely failed converter wouldnt cause the same fault!
Personally, Ive never seen a converter that didnt transmit Some drive, but it must be possible...
In your case, the line-pressure test is a good start as well as checking for fluid flow etc.....

'85s with the 617 engines had a one year only unique torque converter. They had a higher stall speed than the earlier models to help with the off line acceleration of the taller geared 2.88 differential ratio. You'll will need to get one off '85 617 turbo found in 300D and 300SD.

The part number is 126 250 2302 xxxx.

Another possible route is to look into seeing if the later years model 603 3.0L powered 300D or 300SDL torque converters are a match.

The trans shop said I needed a rebuilt converter so I put one in and it did not fix my problem. I took the trans to the same shop and they kept it for 2 weeks and said they don't know what is wrong with it. They felt hurt when I refused to pay them for looking at it, I had already paid them $80 for the first bad info about the converter. I now have the trans at another shop waiting for a rebuild. When I had the "new" converter in I did a pressure test and it was only 10 lbs instead of 175 to 200 like the book says. If I ever have a trans problem again I will just order a rebuilt trans and converter and be done with it. It takes me about 4 hrs to pull or install using a friends lift and I don't like to do it over and over.

Sorry to hear that, Jim. There is another SD doing the same thing on the forum. I pointed him to your thread. Good luck to you.

If I was in the OP's position, I would be looking for parts to do a manual conversion.
