No money--barely getting by, living in a Quanset hut. Up there, when someone hits a moose--it's instantly frozen.
You can pick it up for free or they will butcher it for you for 80 bucks(not deer).

They lived off of road kill one year.

dude, no one believes your story. first of all no one moves from manhattan to alaska. the other way around, maybe. living in a hut? come on, now, buddy.

let's be honest here, craig. back in your heyday, you used to be a wild child who liked to drive fast cars and get laid. one day you drunk too much and drove your porsche fast, and then one thing led to another.

you're still a womanizer, but at least you're alive. so you figured you'd change your ways and then you bought a 123 and are no longer capable of driving fast or attracting women to you with your car.

the rest is history

I wish it was that interesting. I hit the dear (driving too fast) at about 6AM on my way to a nuclear power plant in the middle of no-place, PA. Killed the deer, killed the car, made my back and neck sore for a week.

Now I'm a boring, old married guy with a slow car.

Years ago, over a short time period, I hit 2 deer & a dog. All incidents were on rural TN roads. Insurance repaired the truck (88 Mazda) bought new without argument. I slowed down just a little & haven't hit anything since. I haven't even hit any smaller animals like rabbit, possums, skunks etc. It was a simple solution. Granted, deer frequently cross suddenly but 5 mph slower makes collisions fewer. Unfortunately, we are becoming more crowded here and people are driving faster than the small roads were built for.

I just posted a WTB in the Parts section. After the car is repaired, I want to have that clear plastic stuff applied to protect the new paint from rock dings. However, the body shop advises waiting at least 90 days for the new paint to properly cure. In the meantime, I plan to buy a "sacrificial" [because I plan to throw it away afterwards] bra for our Christmas trip to the snow. So far, shopping on line, I can't find one to fit this car. All of the usual suspects have come up empty. Anyone have a source?

How about something like this?

http://www.kpg-industrial.com/products/shield_temporary_sprayon_bra_protection/

Parts

The body shop ended up buying me a new hood from Mercedes. The used one turned out to have been repainted and they didn't know what might be under the repaint (hailstorm dings and bondo, anyone?) so they rejected it. Almost all of the replacement parts have been received so they should be able to finally get to work next week. I was "allowed" to visit the car (brought flowers & get-well card) and they have it stripped of the damaged parts except for the fender.

The shop has had a dozen cars totaled by various insurance companies in the past week and said ours would have been too, except for all of the documentation I was able to provide, showing how all the owners had cared for the car.

Was shown an interesting newish Volvo by the rep. The entire drive train comes out with four bolts and a few cables and linkages. makes it a lot easier to repair, he said. The "four bolts" part reminded me of my wife's VW Beetle.

I suppose I should ask them at least to plug in the trickle charger!

More photos -- showing the front of the car with the new fender support (black paint as received from Mercedes) welded in place as of this morning (12-06-2010) and then a closeup of the fender support freshly painted this afternoon.

AFAIK, they have all the parts so it's just paint and assemble and paint. BTW, the new-from-Mercedes hood was $630 according to the dealer. Don't know how much the rejected used hood was, maybe $200?

Getting close

As I write, the car is out at Ralph's alignment shop getting its front end checked, just in case. One piece of trim is waiting to be installed by the body shop (you will see it missing in the photo) and we should be picking up the car this (Friday) afternoon. The body shop guys were all impressed (I was told) that the car is in such good shape for its age and miles.

Now that the the car has a brand new right headlamp assembly, the left headlamp looks a tad yellow, even though it has had the 3M "Headlight Lens Restoration System" (done by me). I'll have to try again. It isn't noticeable unless you compare closely and know what you're looking for.

Harry at the body shop does not have a warm fuzzy feeling about covering the car with anything that blocks its ability to "breathe" and out-gas whatever (no doubt toxic ) solvents remain in the new paint. So we will take our chances for the next 90 days, have any dings touched up, and then get the front end plastic coated.

About large animal collisions

A police officer I knew told me that most animals are killed at night because they are mesmerized by the light of the headlights. (Hence, indeed, the "deer in the headlights" saying.)

This is why the headlights on locomotives aren't stationary.

If you see deer ahead, he advised best thing to do is weave back and forth (if possible) or flick your high beams on and off -- while sounding the horn.

Finished!

Got the car back at 4pm today. It looks great. In addition to repairing the damage caused by the deer (hood, fender, headlamp, radiator, air cleaner, coolant reservoir, headlamp washer) we got a whole new front for the car (grille, bumper, etc.) plus paint. Fifteen years of rock dings are gone.

Total cost was $7831 all of which was paid by our insurance . (The cost over the original estimate of $5600 was due to getting a new hood instead of a used one and the additional damage discovered when they took the car apart.) After 40+ years of paying insurance premiums, we finally get something back. Since animal collisions are considered "non-chargeable" accidents, I don't expect any changes in our policy.

Under California law, we have one year to discover any additional damage and have the insurance claim re-opened. The body shop's work is warranted during our ownership of the car, which hopefully will be many more years.

One take-away from this is that evening driving in rural areas is hazardous. In the future we will eliminate as much such exposure as possible.

Jeremy

The car looks great. I very happy it has worked out for you. I do like the w210 in white, by the way. May you have many more years of happy motoring with the car....
