waahhh. frost on my windows... back to hot water time
I hate frosty windows. and hot water does such a good job cleaning them off. my 123 wagon this morning cleared right off. getting ready to go out and do the 124 wagon for the trip to school bus stop, and off to work.

I agree..........not worth the risk...........sudden temperature shock will definitely crack it if there are any small stone chips with the beginnings of a crack that can permeate.
Just use the alcohol based spray.........costs about $2.00..........leave it in the trunk. I will admit to using the propane torch on a couple of occasions when the ice was 1/8" thick.................fast, but risky. |

so far, I've dodged the bullet.
I've lived in eastern washington, South dakota, SC and NC... I've used hot water every winter for 30+ years. with cracked windows too. never had an issue once... I pour the water on slowly, and start on one side. I never pour the entire bucket on a window all at once... maybe it's my method. my SD has several rock chips on it. no issues.

Years ago when I worked near some of you guys I used to use a plastic scraper. The ice was cold enough to be reasonably dry & you could drive off & then let the remainder melt by the defrost. Worked for me.

cold water works almost as well....just need to use a bit more, and it comes right out of the hose that way.
You can also put a tarp on the winshield, then in the morning, pull the tarp off. Easy breazy.

Rain-X makes it scrape easier. Good washer solvent is good too, with the heated nozzles working, ... or retrofit the later 124 washer-bottle heater and some Water-Wetter in the radiator to speed heat transfer (only useful once the engine is warm).

good ole golden shower...pee...warm enough to melt the frost but not hot enough to crack the glass...works well with frozen door handles too...as long as it's your own pee...

I prefer to live in a warmer, no frost, climate.
My 2nd option is always park in the garage. Works everytime!

The frosty windows isn`t the problem, the problem is, you have a JOB, and have to leave too early in the morning.
Now us Retired guys don`t have that problem Now this is where a block heater come in to play. start engine, let is idle for a few minutes with the defroster on. go back in and finish the coffee. The other problem, is leaving for work 5 min after you should have, and you are in that "OH S4!t" mode.. Charlie
