OM617 Crank Pulley Wobble
Ok so I noticed a metallic "clang" from the front of my SD at idle, goes away at anything above. I looked at the crank pulley because I had a similar noise a few years ago and it turned out to be loose crank pulley bolts.. I notice the pulley is wobbling a bit.
So today I try to tighten down the obvious, as I thought, loose bolts. I only found 2 that moved when I tried to tighten them. I still have the wobble and the noise it getting worse. I took a vid but lost it somehow. I am thinking that my balancer/damper got damaged when I lost several pulley bolts a few years ago. It perhaps took this long to reach it's failure point. So crank pulley wobble = bad balancer? |
Probably.

That's what I feared. Do you think a used one from the yard is worth a try?

Is the balancer (crankshaft) bolt loose?

27 mm.
It''s a little tough for the balancing disc to wobble unless the crankshaft bolt is loose. (Which is not to say that the disc is wobbling.) |
I will have to take another look with it running since now I have seen some drawings of all the different sections. From what I recall only the pulley wobbles. The last time it got to the point where is sounded like it was knocking. I found most of the bolts sheared off or backed out. Only one was actually semi holding the pulley one. This time it's more of a metallic tap. I only assume its the pulley area because that is where I hear it, the wobble and past issues.
27mm Thanks |
Wasn't there an account a number of years ago of a balancer shearing at some kind of rubber joint?

I found the video hidden in the sim card. I am converting to mp4 now, I hope the quality is good enough for mp4. Gimme a min

It went from 172 MB's to 10 MB's:eek: It will work for now... in the mean time I will try to upload the original, the estimate was like an hour. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wshFGCThdao |
I think the MP4 is ok. You can hear it for sure. Looks like the whole thing is wobbling.

I could hear the sound but couldn't see much of a wobble. Are you sure it's coming from that location? Have you put a stethoscope on it? Could it be the vacuum pump?
|
I will listen with a tool.. I don't have a stethoscope. Again I am only assuming the pulley cause it is clearing wobbling. I have compared it to my TD and that thing is rock solid.
