Cleaning up the IP.
Hey guys, have a question. I have an extra IP and lift pump that I yanked off a good running (but overheated) engine. It's pretty mucky, very dirty end to end, looks like it was pulled from a U boat wreckage(exaggerating). None of the lines were off of it, but the line was off of the lift pump. What's the best way to clean it up, in case I might want to use it someday? Would it be bad to put it in a parts washer? Or should I just run a cleaner through the fuel system on the chance I use it? Maybe run it a few miles with some old injectors on the car so I don't risk clogging my good injectors? What do you guys think about handling an Ip that worked on the car but has been outside for some time?

Also, this engine was used with Bio Diesel.

Bio Diesel, or WVO?
big difference. still, I'd spritz it up, clean off the external, and seal up the thing for storage.

Plug up all the openings on the pump. Wash it off with a solvent cleaner. Get a bucket with a lid. Set it in the bucket with some diesel or furnace oil already in the bucket. Enough to cover the pump .
Let it sit a day or so. Remove the plugs as any loose external grime left on the outside should have settled to the bottom. You do not want dirt to get into the pump either. Put a lid on the container. The pump can sit for years this way with no harm done.Do not disturb any gunk that has settled to the bottom of the container by moving it or the bucket around .. This is the best way to store a pump. Generally speaking if a used pump is drained and has been just sitting around for quite a time I preffer not to get it. Stored in oil it should remain in the same condition as when stored for more than the remainder of your lifetime. Even a lot longer as long as it is a pump with no electronic/electrical components at all. |
