I never approached someone to buy their car, but I approached the PO of my CD to compliment him on how nice I thought it was and he asked me if I wanted to buy it.

Yes, it does pay to compliment them on how nice their car is .

While driving on freeway, a guy drove close next to me, rolled down his window and yelled "How much?"

I once told my aunt and grandma how nice their Mercedes was.

Few months later it was mine

Are you sure it was the car that he was after?

I've bought several 1965 to 1969 Mustangs that way.

There was one car I tried for two years. Every day on the way to work I would pass a two room house with about two dozen old cars from the '30's to the '50's in the yard. There was a 1947 Hudson pickup that I wanted real bad. About once a month I would ask the old man living there about it and he would tell me the cars were his kids' inheretance.

One day I went past the house and the cars were gone. I went and talked to a middle aged woman in the yard and asked about the cars. She said the old man died and she was his daughter and they couldn't sell the house with all the old cars in the yard, so she paid someone to haul them off.

I found out the junk yard they went to but was too late to keep the Hudson from getting crushed.

The lesson: if you want it be pushy.

Sometimes it works, at least for me.

I like to buy cars that aren't for sale.

Noticed a clean 84 300D sitting under a tree for six months. No ad or sign. Stopped and asked about it. Guy said it was his sons. Does he want to sell it? Dad said Sure!
Son thought it had tranny problems, wouldn't go up hills. I bought it for 500, barely got it home. New fuel filters and it was good to go.
My kids drove it 50K until one of my daughters wrecked it (not her fault). Got 1800 from insurance!

Also got my 87 300td from a forum member (didn't know it then) at first he didn't want to sell it. About 6 months later he called to offer it to me.

Got my 67 Series 2A 109 Landrover that way too. Knew where it was for years, not being run. I finally knocked on the door, wife seemed happy that someone wanted it. Made a pretty good deal with husband.

All were within 5 miles of my house!

Ed

Flipping cars or trucks for a profit, whether trying to or not, can be more profitable than trying to do it with real estate these days.

I flipped a 32 year old Honda vintage motorcycle a couple years ago. Paid $1,990.00 for it, rode and enjoyed it, then sold it 14 months later for $2,980.00.

I've never made an offer on someone's car out of the blue. I've had it done to me several times. Twice so far on the Yota diesel project.

I have done it on more than one occasion with cars and such and I am batting around .750. It's shocking what a simple question will do? I am never afraid to ask... The art of just asking has opened so many doors in my life. "all you have to do is ask"!!!!

On nice days, my wife will run errands with her 68 MGB.
It's unusual to NOT find a scrap of paper under wiper blade asking to sell.

My youngest daughter refers to them as "Love notes".

Of course, the answer has always been "Sorry, it's not for sale, it's part of the family.".

Jim

I've bought many cars by asking if they're for sale. Weeds around it? Old plates? Knock on door. My first vehicle was a '55 Chevy truck built by using newspaper route money. As I delivered papers on my bike I'd notice old, rusty trucks in back yards, driveways, etc. Get a couple bucks up and go knock on the door. Last vehicle I bought that way was about a year ago. Garage had a Suburban outside with expired plates. Engine had blown, bought it for less than half of typical selling price. Happened to have an engine ready, too.

Worst experience? A dark blue Monte Carlo, maybe 85 vintage, sat in the same spot for almost a year. Knocked on the door, asked if car was for sale, "F*** no." OOOoookay. Two months later car was on lawn with for sale sign. I was young then so I stopped, made an offer of $700. Guy says "Ok, trannie's blown." I would have bought it but I was only there to return his previous insult, which I did and left.

I've had 3 offers on my 300SD in the past 4 months, even though its in extremely rough shape/lots of rust. I turned them down. Same guy even came by twice, claiming he "fixes" them. I told him it would need more fixing than he'd want to do and sent him on his way.
