Just a couple days ago I left my card under the windshield wiper of a silver 300CD which I've only seen sitting in one place for months.

Down the street from where I live, I had seen the same 300E 4Matic for years and years, then I noticed that the car was now parked on the street and a new C class sat in the driveway, a few months went by and I approached him and asked if he would be interested in selling it, He told me the radiator blew out which caused the engine to overheat, the rest of the car was still very nice though, we agreed on $800, I had a used radiator along with a used engine and a used front drive axle put in it and it was good to go, a little wash and buff and sold it for $3000, I had about $2200 into it at the time of the sale, not a lot of profit but at least I saved A nice MB who's destiny would have probably been the scrap yard next. I was very happy at the end of it all.

we got a call from the guy with the 240d about a year after my wife left her own note under the windshield wiper. Drove 4 hours round trip to pick it up. Still the best looking MBZ we have ever owned and her DD for probably 4 years and 40k miles
She is for Sale now BTW, see FS classifieds

I've never asked, but when I used to drive my Porsche ('64 C cab) back in the '70's, a couple of times a month I would find a note under the ww's w/ a ph # and how much I wanted. A friend who worked at a foreign auto shop was approached by guys from Germany who were looking for old Porsches to 'send home'. He described my car & they offered $25,000.00 sight unseen. (its in very nice condition, & parked now for 30+ years, I want to get it back on the road, now that I'm retired) -c-

ive only offered like that through PMs on forums which I think is a great method as people on an enthusiast form are generally above board and have reputations.
Ive had a few offers on a 1965 buick I used to own. Once at a very shady gas station at 1 in the morning somewhere in DC, a guy wanted to give me 5k right then cash for the car and had the money on him! I was on a road trip at the time, so I declined. Later (4 years) I sold it for 1500 bucks, so maybe I should have taken this guy up on his offer and rented a car to finish my trip. I don't think the 3 guys I was on a road trip with though would have liked doing half the trip in a classic 19 foot long car that drew the women, and finishing it in a kia.
