I went to work on my car today to re-time the IP and as I hand turned the crankshaft I noticed that the noise magically disappeared.
I got the car running smoothly and still no noise, I did not do anything I can think of that would have made it go away. Maybe someday I'll find out what it was, hopefully not anytime soon though.

This is one thing I have had happen as well on mercedes. The engine develops a noise I cannot easily identify. As suddenly as it appeared it is gone.
The last time I thought that it was so serious an issue if it had continued I would have taken things apart. Then it dissapeared totally with no intervention. |

Well I guess I'll sleep a little easier knowing that.
I'll assume it was the chain rails getting broken in.
