Bus,

since you have no multimeter, try this...

Turn on your headlights, try to start it, do the headlights dim a little when you turn the key? if so, then juice is flowing.

Next, with the shifter on Park, try to push the actual shifter "forward" then crank. OR try to pull it back just a bit then crank. If the car cranks then it might be your park-neutral safety switch.

Try to get a multimeter, they cost just $2 at Harbor Freight and will save you tons of head scratching

OK..In the morning ....with daylight I'll be trying 1st the junction box jump...

with car in PARK. Is the engine suppsed to turn over with doing this?

(or what happens?)

then 2nd If I can find the Solenoid ...( Sorry Larry I'll have to search..)...and necessary I'll try this.....

BTW....This lovely SD may become available within the next 1-2 weeks to the first PP member with a valid passport or ID.....There's a couple of 318i bm'r convertibles I'm hoping to check on next week.

edit: available for $1.00 .. It is rough interior with issues..

I'll keep my 300E..

You may be on to something here with "park-neutral safety switch".. the car rolled back in the garage when left in park and cozied up to my garage door when I came in earlier....

Yes. The starter should function. If it doesn't work when jumping the wires, I doubt jumping at the solenoid would do anything.

no, if the car moved by itself you might have a different problem.

the pnp switch is like a gatekeeper to make sure you have the car in park or neutral before allowing the starter to engage. it has nothing to do with the car's transmission.

i like the way you think though

It's not enough that the lights and radio go on... try giving it a jump start. If it works, there you go, it's the battery. A multimeter would be a good and cheap idea. They go for like $15 and you can test your battery and all of your electrical system. It's better than getting a new starter and then find out yours was perfectly fine...

If the battery were low, you would typically hear a 'click'.

I would be careful jump starting a Mercedes. You might fry the .........I can't think of the name of it......the little relay that sits close to the firewall. The one with the fuse visible from the top. Someone help me out...what is it called again?

For the last 2years ( under my 22 yr old son's watchful eye ) the transmission

has been shifting fine.. but hard to shift and laying "off" center from the gear knob shifter....somehow I still think this pnp switch may be guilty party...

Can you describe location and how again to diagnose this ?

Thanks,
AA

try starting the car with the shifter in slightly "off" position. push hard on the shifter or pull it back slightly from the P or N position. if it starts, then you have your culprit.

honestly, i have not changed one in a MB before, I've done it multiple times on Volvos.

Sorry man, someone here will chime in on the PNP.

If it starts when you jump the terminals, the problem is either in the ignition circuit or the neutral safety switch. Make sure it's not in gear when you jump the terminals.

You could have lights etc and still have a bad ground from chassis to engine causing the starter not to function.
Hi....Kerry,

It is the 1st & the 4th ....Don't ask why but I just got around to doing this...

and yes the car did start (stalled out bcs not run in a month and it's a diesel that needs acceleration to get warmed up.) but yes this rules out a bad ignition circuit or a bad neutral safety switch.

So I'm assuming now a need a new (reman) starter....

Any suggestions for next move?

Thanks
Austin

If the car's starter jumped to life when you did the solenoid trick, i would say its a starter solenoid for sure. Not sure if Mercedes starters have removable solenoids or not. If so, this will be an easy fix.

If the starter/solenoid are all one unit and must be replaced as such then i'd see if you have a shop locally that can rebuild the starter for you. Diesel starters are quite powerful as they have to push the crank and rotating mass as well as fight extremely high compression. Which means they'll probably cost more to replace/rebuild (rebuild being the cheaper of the two)

GP;

Ok..thanks...maybe thats the next move.

After a few jolts with wire jumping the starter I did start to smell a little nasty burning odor..so thats when I quit.

But I'm hoping when time comes to take the car in this will start up again and like a good diesel keep running until I decide to shut her off.
