Sad. I wonder what entailed the scumbag to do that? Did they get into an argument? why take it out on an old 240D. I wonder if it still would have run?

The 'suspect' had a felony record and I guess he wanted money quicker than Richard was paying him. Plus knew where Richard kept the key. After a local salvage yard refused to buy the car, he torched it.

And now (as a certain radio commentator used to say) the rest of the story!
The 'suspect' actually skated on the charges because, according to the DA, the industrial-park security video, taken where he torched the car, wasn't clear enough for a positive ID.
Since the 'suspect' was broke, his lawyer hired him to work off the legal fees, repairing the lawyer's boat. After he requested a chunk of money to buy a rebuilt boat engine, he skipped town with the cash!

As for the 240D engine, The fire had spread underhood, incinerating the battery, and toasting the top of the engine.

Richard did get the hood-star and the 4 hubcap-rims, with two remaining undamaged tires. And I got the one undamaged front corner light.
Later, Richard sold his Pagoda SL without using the 240D rims or tires.
So I bought the 4 rims as spares in case I decided to change my 240D from Bundts to hubcaps, and the two new 195/70R14 radials, which went on the front of my '87 Isuzu pickup.
