Need to replace rear windshield gasket - or how to get a price quote from dealer

I have to replace the rear gasket on my rear windshield. It's $150 labor at Safelite + $150 OEM MB gasket. That total is almost as much as it was to install a new front windshield from Safelite (with all parts and labor--been happy with it btw). Since the total was almost as much as new installed, i thought might as well install a new one. So I called Safelite but they don't make a rear windshield for my 300SD and said it was a dealer-only item. I tried to get a quote from the dealer to get new gasket installed, but they're always reluctant to give you a quote because you'll probably drive away as fast as possible to an indie after you hear their price. Dealer wants you to drop it off so they can look at it then give you a price later. They know you're less likely to run away if your car is already there.

So two questions:
1. What's the going rate for a dealer to install new rear windshield gasket? All I could get was about 2 hours labor x whatever their labor charge + parts.
2. Why don't dealers like to give price quotes unless you drop off the car?

I doubt the dealer will install the glass. more than likely they will farm it out to a local glass shop. then tack on a couple hours labor plus the install.

I've never had an issue getting a parts price from the dealer... I even get discounts when I say I'm a shop, or a mechanic or some such...
most parts counter guys are pretty reasonable.

i just had both front and rear done this past week on my 79sd.labor was 200 each at a local shop-they said it took a long time to get it right, not too many shops do these old cars,i supplied gasket.they were able to take rear window out without breaking it,it does have a line behind rear seat for defroster.front windshield was broken in getting out,but it had a crack and needed to go anyway.i dont want to know what dealer would cost,or if they even have anyone who remebers how to do it.dont they farm it out?

I was able to get a w126 rear windshield seal for about 50 bucks a couple years ago, I don't think I got it from this site though, before I knew about it. The biggest issue was that the safelite/other glass people would NOT guarantee their work since the windshield was so old. Might as well do it yourself...I know there is a DIY writeup somewhere around here, it involves the old clotheline + lubricant method and takes some patience.

When I called my local dealer about rear glass for my 240, they told me they farmed all that stuff out to local glass shops. So I wouldn't be surprised if they farm it out once your car is at the dealer, then tack on their fees onto the cost of the glass man's charges.

Good luck on a new window. I only found 2 glass people would could even get rear glass for my 240. One wanted over $600 the other $300. Thats just for the glass. Though the windshield is probably more common.

I've done both the front and rear windows on my 240. It's not hard. I did it on a warm sunny day so nothing was brittle. I had no brakes, and both the seals are holding strong. The front window has weathered two winters thus far.

That meant no breaks in the glass.
