Yup, I love my 603 wagon. It left me "standed" twice because of a bad voltage regulator. First time because it was worn out, second time because the replacement was a KAE and not bosch. Both occasions I was able to get a jump and drive wherever, so "stranded" may be TOO strong of a word. Actually there was one more time; when my transmission line blew. All this however is not so much related to Engine though!

Mine has nearly 190k on original 14 head and gasket and has been on Mobil 1 Synthetic since 160k and it loves it. Small leak from bottom seal of IP, and front seal of tranny, but the engine itself has never given me crap! it has plenty of get-up and nice and smooth compared to 617s!

Yep, my voltage regulator got me as well. My mistake the day it happened was freaking out and turning the engine off..... (I learned that day that once you start a 603 it will keep running regardless of electricity)

Soooo....if you were stuck on the proverbial desert island with only one engine, the 602 or the 603, which would you choose and why? (and, yes, the island comes with a never-runs-out diesel pump)

I would probably choose a 602 simply because of the head issue. However, I have no experience with the 602, so that is based strictly on what I have read!

The only other OM60x I have driven is a 601 190d... I don't think it ran right cause it was a miserable dog. I sold it to a forum member and he is doing something with it. He seems too like the engine. That 190d was much slower than my old '85 golf with the tiny 58HP(about?) diesel. Both were 5 spd's.

I know very very little about the 602.... BUT if they put it in a Sprinter for commercial work then you know it must be a robust power plant. Kinda like a Cummins I guess. Except that engine was put in to a crappy pickup truck and the 602 was put in to a rather capable sprinter/freightliner

603! Because it has 6 cylinders and not the odd 5. I guess I should be around a 602 before making a snap decision.

The 606(?) seems interesting to me. Certainly looks nice under the hood. I understand the non-turbo is silky smooth but a dog in traffic.

Guess I need to look at my regulator... I need to do the same to my TD.

Whichever one could be most easily stuck on the back of a homemade boat.

I love my 603...especially since I didn't have any idea if it was usable when I bought the car.

239k, original head, original gasket...sits at 85C (unless the A/C is on in 90F weather and stop and go traffic - R134 ).

Almost all of the issues I have with the car are chassis related...at most a glow plug out on the engine, delivery valve seals and a broken injector line

Much love for my 2 Om 603s.

In my sedan, i regularly get 28 mpg.
My wife drives the wagon and nearly always squeezes 30-31 out of it.
I can only get 26 out of the wagon though, my foot is made of lead.

The Turbo 603 pulls like a train up a hill.

That's what I was thinking. Then you could power an ice machine and blender. Invite some natives(you never said a deserted island lol) over for margaritas.
