Towing

I would like to know how well a 603 tows. I know overheating would be a relevant issue. I also want to know how my 400e would tow too.

Bought my '87 300 last January with 313000 and a #14 head. It now has just under 327000 on it and still going strong. Original engine. Cleaned the hardlines, alda, flying saucer, crossover valve and pressure nipple. 0-60 went from 23 seconds to 12. Dumped the green stuff for Zerex. Killed the EGR and air valve. Swapped front rotors and installed EBC Red Stuff pads. Replaced the very worn seats with ones from a '94 E320. Replaced the missing klima relay so now the air works (was thanking god for that this summer!). At 75-80 mph I get 28mpg. At 65-70 mph I get at least 30 and as high as 32. It has saved me about a grand in fuel so far over my truck ('06 Chevy Ext cab, longbed, 4x4, 5.3l).

There are far fewer of this family of engines than the old 617. The om617 is a fine engine, in the tractor sense, see my signature. I own/drive two of them. And I think we all know that a few OM603's have head issues.. lets not get dragged in to that debate.

We need the OM60x advocates to speak up!

Stop the bashing
85 is to high. Mines under 85 all the time. Starts easily in the cold. My head almost certainly needs replacing.

I'd rather talk about how much I like the suspension on the 124 and the quiet ride at speed.

One of my 87's took a head hit towing a truck, overheated. Original owner thought it'd be OK to continue driving it hot. Cylinders 5 and 6 proved him wrong.

My scouting is all local --- $50 to my "driver" and I get the car "home". Now where would I park it? I have that small garage, small driveway, can't park on the grass issue. ARGH.

Just waiting on the owners to become "sellers".

The 602 can have the same head issue if overheated. Ask me how I know!

I have a couple 603 TD s and a 602 2.5T . I must say they are all great. I like the 602 cause more room under hood and about 8 to 10 mpg better. I average 36 mpg with the 93 2.5T .

But i love the wagons. One of my wagons has basically 5 cylinders of power. Compression is 350, 420, 100, 405, 300, 440 . Something like that. 2 cylinders add up to 400 . And despite that it will still fly up a hill when that turbo kicks in and cruises at 90. It burns a little oil due to blow by. Hoping its less than a quart every 1000 miles. That said, i want to put a 602 in a 1987 TD. Plenty of power, easier to work on since more room. Is that a simple drop in replacement?

Keep an eye out for a nice , i mean real nice, 1993 Black on Black 2.5 T in the for sale section. I can't keep em all. I''m set on driving this 603 with low compression until it fixes itself using water injection or mystery oil soak or until it blows up. Then i want to put a 602 in it. if you got a 602 let me know.

I'm really enjoying mine. I'm a new owner of t, and new to the wole MB TD's. The car has 225k o the milage, but it has more than that on it. (The speedo runs about 10 mph fast, mile marker to mile marker .7 mile on trip) Who knows how long it's been like that.

I'm slowly learning and fixing as I go thanks to this great board. Today, I put in the new thermostat.

Something that can't be right.... When I filled up last week I reset the trip, like I always do... I just hit the half way mark on the tank at 358 miles.... Seems way to high. (add in the fact that 1 real mile = .7 on the trip)

Still think I'm missing power. But nothing to compare it to directly and no past experience. No smoke, no oil burn/loss seems to have a little coolant disappearing but very little. who know. I'll figure it out as I go on.

For the 1000 bucks I paid for it, I can't really go wrong. I have set aside another 1000 bucks to put into it and get it to something I can really enjoy.

Towing! I just completed a trip of about 3000 miles with my 87 TD towing a 13ft"Scamp" little camper that weighs about 1600lbs(guess based on 1460lbs actual when empty) We went from south central Florida thru Georgia,South Carolina,North Carolina and back visiting family along the way and did some digging for Stones(wife calls them gems) did alot of driving in the mountains of western N.C. The #14 head concern made me baby it on the long steep grades by dropping into 3rd gear and letting it rev up a bit instead of working it hard, managed to keep the EGT below 1100f and the coolant temp never exceded 200f.Transmission temp never reached 200,i did put an extra trans cooler on before the trip,We were all over those mountains and crossed the eastern continental divide twice.Mostly camped in government campgrounds. The car used no measureable amount of oil,the fuel consumption dropped to just a bit over 20 mpg which i figured was great considering the drag of the camper and all the hill climbing.Drag of the camper became very noticeable on the EGT if we went much over 60 mph so that was as fast as we usually drove,of course in the mountains there were not too many places where i could have gone faster anyway. After we got back home and took the trailer off the wagon felt like it was performing better than ever,i cant be sure if it was really or just felt that way after dragging the camper for 3000 miles. I would love a 5 speed in mine. I've always like a manual trans better and so does my wife.
