Mystic Engine Oil

Any one have any thoughts on Mystic engine oil? My Son just changed the oil in his Kenworth with Mystic and said he could actually tell a difference in noise, power, and starting. Hasn't driven enough to check mileage yet.
Price is a lot less than Rotella also.

Thanks
Paul

Never heard of it really. I'd be interested in hearing more about it

Any increased internal noise with an oil change is suspect. Less noise is usually okay. That engine is a little too expensive to experiment with.

True viscosity under heavy loading must be there at least to the engine manufactures minumum requirements. This is not a lightly loaded diesel car engine.

Get a data sheet on the oil. It is heavy diesel rated I hope. Never hearing of the brand is not particularily signifigant. Much cheaper than rotella may or may not be.

The is some things not being said.
What was the Oil he originally had in the Car and what was the viscosity?
Was the original Oil dino Oil or was it synthetic Oil.

Members have said it is easier to start your Car in cold weather with Synthetic Oil and that it over several hundred miles it can free up sticking Piston rings.
Socold the Synthetic Oil must circulate easier through the Engine and that would give you more power when cold as would unstuck Piston Rings; if the had previously been stuck.

In general thinner oil will circulate more easily through the system and give you a little more power.

However, without some sort real test the felt power issue is too subjective. Somewhat like some people can get pain relief when given a Sugar Pill after they are told it is a pain medication. Some times or thoughts rise to our expectations.

Look at all of the Fuel Saving gadgets out their that people claim work. Yet, what owner of a Fleet of Cars or Trucks has used any of them.

I've used it quite a bit. 15/40 synthetic blend, bought from Farm&Fleet. Usually pick up a 5 gallon pail with rebate for $36. When I see farmers buying it by the cases for use in their equipment, which is worth a considerable amount of money, I feel it will do just fine in a mercedes. Just my opinion;)

I use mystic in my truck, and I've used it in customer's cars.
it's nice cause it comes in a 2gallon jug.
about the same price as dino rotella. IIRC it's semisynthetic... not sure.

oh darn. i was hoping this post was going to be about some super-natural "mystically enchanting" oil, maybe would get us 50mpg.

my bad.

Mystik is a Citgo product. The local Farm & Fleet store sells it in quarts, gallons and 5-gallon pails. I've used it in on occasion in vehicles I'm not too fussy about.

The bobistheoilguy forum has many threads about Mystik products. The gear oil and other synthetic or synthetic blend products seem to be pretty well regarded, the higher-viscosity dino oils less so.

Does it come in 5w40 blends as well or only 15w40?

I'm do for a change over the Christmas/New Years holiday season before my big trip.

The Citgo website lists a 5w40 synthetic.

I havent seen mystic. I don't really like to cheap out on oil though, especially with these old Merc diesel engines.

I run this oil in my SD and it really seems to like it.

This is not another oil thread, just a question if anyone else had used it. The truck in question is a 1990 Kenworth with a Cat engine and 600,000+ miles. If he says he can tell a difference between Mystic and Rotella (in a good way) then it is better. One difference is the Rotella is 15/40 and the Mystic is 15/50. That could be what made it feel different. The Mystic is a simi-syn, diesel rated oil and will go in my 300D at the next oil change.

Some people have a hard time comprehending what they read. The full name is Mystic jt8 and I forgot that it is available in 15/50. As long as it's a proper rated oil with the proper viscosity I have yet to be able to distinguish from one brand to the next .

okyoureabeast 11-17-2010 06:20 PM

I'll check this out at my next oil change. I know it's just placebo, but I feel like the car changes in how the way it drives with each oil change. So it is always fun to switch around to different oils brands from time to time.

i am currently using it. works fine, but i don't trust it and will change it out.

i don't trust it for a reasons that probably has nothing to do with the oil. my previous engine had a rod bearing go bad while i was using the mystic.

i'm using it now because i had an 8qt bottle laying around and put it in my transplant engine to see if it was a good engine.

that mobil delvac was in my old engine when i began its baby knocks. ran the mystic to see if it was the oil and if the knock would go away. with both oils the engine sounded and ran the same. rod just went with the mystic.

answer is it wasn't the oil. i still have bad feelings about them... but would/might use them again. just a rant.
