97 E300 Injection Pump Replacement

I just received the bad news that my 97 E300 needs an Injection pump! I need to know if this is a job that requires any special tools or procedures. I really need to know if this a job that I should attempt at my company shop. If anyone has a detailed replacement procedure and tools requirements I would appreciate seeing them. I also would like any thoughts from professional Mercedes techs where I could save any money on the pump and related parts that would be needed. Thanks for any information anyone provides. The shop that diagnosed it wants about $4000.00 to replace with a reman pump. Thoughts???

All the information remove and replace the pump can be found here by searching for your engine or a 603. You need a locking tool for the pump, socket for the crankshaft bolt, pump mounting o-ring, vacuum pump gasket, intake manifold gasket. The job is not as difficult as it first seems.

Thanks now the hard part is finding a pump for a reasonable price. I also am not completely convenced that the pump is my issue based on some research. Unfortunatly I cannot diagnose myself since I only have a generic code reader.

Question for the experts; I have printed the procedure for replacing the injection pump on my 97 E300 and I feel very comfortable about the replacement process. It is very clear cut nothing unusual. However, there are three tools that I need to know if I can do the job with out or is there an alternative that would be more available. First is the "Centering Sleeve" next is the "Serrated Wrench" and finally the "Arresting Screw" I think I can get by on the 24 point socket. Any replies are appreciated. I am beginning to think I will not be able to do this job without those tools!

What were the symptoms you took the car in for repair for...?

IP's are pretty horrendously Reliable items! Be interesting to see what the symptoms were and what was done/checked to see the pump was faulty....

Many faults blamed on pumps are not actually pump faults, but something completely different....

Engine is dying mainly at idle but would at speed occasionally. When it died the ETS light would come on and then the CEL then it will restart right away. I do not have a code reader that will pull MB specific codes so I do not know that information. According to the indy shop whatever is failing in the IP is why the ETS light was coming on. I do not know what was done to diagnose the IP as the problem but they had to remove some components to do it. I plan to talk to the shop again today and try to get some more information. My issue at this time is I am out of town on business so I cannot go over to take a look at the car. The K40 relay and fuel shut off valve are new so barring those new components being faulty they are not the culprits.

I understand that these pumps rarely if ever fail however I have not found or heard any alternatives that could be causing the same symptoms. If the Crank Position Sensor were failing would the ETS light come on? If there was an issue with the fuel rack position sensor would I have the same symptoms. I am frantically looking for alternatives since it appears that I will not be able to do this job myself due to the needed special tools.

rack sensor is a little less than a dead IP !! It shown how quick repair shops are to want to replace the most expensive thing they can.

Prolly worth phoning round a few IP Shops and ask how much to replace the sensor

Be defo cheaper than replacing the whole pump. These things are re-built everyday with new parts....
I'll bet the part itself is less than 100 dollars...

Well I have exhausted all possible options; So after much research and speaking to the shop I am confident the problem is the IP. I have found the special tools for less than $200 bucks and a rebuilt IP for less than $900.00. So, I plan to order all the tools and parts and take on the job myself. I have reviewed the procedure outlined on StarTek.com and will do the job myself saving more than $3000.00 compared to the first price quoted by my indy shop. I tried to pawn the problem off on an accident my wife was involved in three months ago but the insurance would not bite! So it is up to me. I will keep you all posted and if I remember too I will post photos of the job...no promises though. Wish me luck!!!

Sounds like you're in shape to replace the IP. Do you need special tools to set IP timing? Does the A-B timing light used for the 601/2/3 engines work on your 606?
