om602 tickity tickity

suspect a bad compensator, best course of action to repair? intermittant, sometimes really bad. Happening more and more often now. Worst case senario?

worse case.... ? it could fail, bind up, and cause valve interference.

...but I think thats really unlikely.

whats more likely is you will begin to damage your camshaft lobes over time.

so what is the best repair? are they seviceable? Venturing intom unknown waters here. I have rebuilt large diesels but they don't have hydraulic compensators. How are they serviced?

jt20 11-21-2010 02:06 AM

I forget if this applies to MB... but usually, you can shim the compensator.

With these engines, I think the best remedy is complete replacement. they go for about $20 each and are pretty easy to get to if you have done any work on the engine before.

This is really funny timing that this thread was posted. Just yesterday I had the hood open on my hot and idling 602 marveling at its operation. I too noticed a tickity tick that I finally attributed to the injectors clicking open and closed. Very subtle but still I think that is what it was. Could that be what you are hearing?

weird beard 11-21-2010 08:15 PM

oh no, most definately a really bad valve tick. gets so bad you want to slouch down in the seat so no one can see you.

what parts need to be replaced? are they just a complete assembly?

jt20 11-22-2010 11:18 PM

These guys under the camshaft, recessed in the head. 2 per cylinder:

Dumped a bottle of lucas in the oil, I am sceptical it will help but willing to give it a try. I am also pondering the possibility of an injector nailing. Due to the extreme intermittance of the tick, and the random sevarity. It happens most when the engine is started and will continue usually until the engine is reved very high. When it is bad I really hammer on the engine, if it is going to blow, let it go in a blaze of glory! Usually it stops after this.

Does the engine feel sorry for acting up? it that why it stops after a good thrashing?

Hasn't happened for a while now, either the lucas is working for now or the engine has learned it's lesson!
