HD or Comfort, once and for all...

I did some searching on the forums for which Bilstein shocks to put in my 83 300SD. I am leaning toward HD instead of comfort. I like tighter steering.

What I did not find was any good evaluation from folks after they installed the HD shocks.

Anyone want to offer up their experience, good or bad?

I have HD on my 85SD. Wouldn't do anything else except perhaps springs & new bushings where ever I can find them in the suspension. Nothing nicer than a new driving old car. Anyone can drive a new car. All it takes is the willingness to write a check.

you want the HD. have them on my E300 and love em. slightly firmer than stock, but not at all harsh or jarring, not even a little. Crisp, yet smooth and compliant, like a factory AMG might feel.

when it comes to Bilsteins, I always always go with HD's for stock ride height, and Sport's for lowered cars. Comforts are for people who want their car to ride like a Buick.

Thanks for doing this poll, I'd been wondering myself, but leaning the HD direction.

No worries Marv I have too much body roll in my car and want to stiffen it up. It is either due to bad shocks all around or perfectly fine comfort shocks that are not stiff enough for me.

I see no mention of shock replacement in the maintenance records from the previous owner. So it is probably due for a new set All around.

I currently have new HDs in front and the OE shocks in back. OE shocks dont do any abnormal ups and downs on the standard bounce test, but going down the road there is a big difference. The rear is more soft/compliant to ireegularities and bumps in the road, however the rear also feels like it shifts side to side when going over the bumps. Not out of control, more along the lines of maybe a tilt?

The shocks seem in good shape, but it will be interesting to see how things change when I put the HDs on the rear.

JHZR2,

I don't have any side to side type stuff, that might be a different issue than shocks.

But for me, I get some leaning, and when I hit the brakes I can feel the car lean forward and watch the nose come back up and give a small bounce. The rear also comes up a bit as well. I don't think that is normal even with comfort shocks. Just a guess.

When I jump on the rear bumper, it does bounce a bit. I assume it would bounce more if the car was lighter. The front shocks look like they were replaced but not with the standard bilstein shocks.

More so the issue is going around turns. It seems to lean a bit much. And going through dips, and things liek that the shocks allow the car to drop.

I believe sideways shifting is a symptom of bad subframe bushings - which mine definitely has. I plan to refresh my suspension this summer. At the least all bushings and shocks, the springs are in the maybe category. It has had a pretty easy life and I'm not racing it or anything.

I have HD's all around, I love the ride. Tight but not harsh, and speed bumps no longer feel like a roller coaster. My car feels very stable at highway speeds.

I was considering a mix of comforts with HD's but my mechanic advised me that HD's all around is what he has been doing for w123's for years with great results.

Wow I was surprised! Im the only one in the comfort camp.

I have 4 new Bilstein comfort shocks on the '85 and it rides great and tight. I don't get the 'buick' feel from it at all.

I also have rebuilt both front and rear suspensions 100%.

How much did that full rebuild cost and what did it include? I rebuilt the front and the shocks on the rear. Did you do it yourself?
