ZDDP

Yep- it's an oil thread...
Go buy some additive of zddp

Here's why

you saw the other thread... right?

Are our diesel rated oils ok?

babymog 11-22-2010 08:39 PM

Personally I prefer MoS2 as a replacement for Zn. The only reason that Zn is preferred by oil companies is, .... the cost of the MoS2.

I add .5micron (IIRC) MoS2 with every other oil change (roughly every 15,000 miles) and have been very happy with the results. Has to be a quality low-micron size additive or the filter will wear all of it.

jt20 11-22-2010 08:40 PM

what form do you buy the moly in?

how do you know the content?

babymog 11-22-2010 08:46 PM

Added above (edited). I used to have the lab-test results, have long since discarded/lost them, hopefully they haven't changed their formulation over the years.

MoS2 is already in many premium oil additive packages.

BTW, if you want a really good tenacious spray-lube, their "Liquid Grease" is a pricey but extremely nice lube to use, contains MoS2 and really hangs on parts (I use it for lots of linkages, hood latches, cables, etc.).

MOS2 is not necessarily a replacement for ZDDP. ZDDP is an obsolete add, and there are things that you cannot even see in spectrographic analysis (UOA) anymore.

Check out bobistheoilguy for LOTS of info.

i remember reading somewhere 2 stroke oil being used as an additive since it has high levels of zddp

This is old news.

As long as you are using one of the diesel specific oils like Delo, Delvac or Rotella T, you have no worries.

Our MB diesels have a sliding mechanism, not a flat tappet. It still likes ZDDP, but is not nearly as necessary as in a true flat tappet engine, such as an old Ford or Chevy V8.

The other reason for sticking with one of these oils as opposed to additives is that they have the proper BALANCE of ZDDP and detergents. Add too much ZDDP and you will end up with a sludging problem. The diesel blends do away with this concern, as long as proper OCI is followed of cours.

+1 Larry.

yep- and have looked at this before, but the thread title now has zddp in it so that searching is easier.

I use a diesel rated oil and kick in one of those 1/2 quarts of STP Oil Additive it claims to contain ZDDP. Probably not a ton, but its not going to hurt.

Daman858 11-23-2010 10:56 AM

The diesel rated oils are safe to use. I think this problem is a bit of over hype but if you want to be safe, you can use Valvoline VR-1 racing oil which has the proper amount of ZDDP in it. It comes in several weights. I use this stuff in all the British cars I have owned plus a couple of old motorcycles with no problems.

I add half a bottle of STP with each oil change just for the ZDDP, but, maybe we don't need it ??

In the case of the STP additive, the ZDDP quantity is small enough that it will probably not excessively disrupt the ZDDP/detergent balance so it won't hurt anything, but it's really not helping anything either.
