1987 300 sdl engine swap

Is ther a way to instal a 617.951 engine from a 1985 300 sd into a 1987 300 sdl 603.961 engine?

you could.....but...why would you. the 87 was made for the 603.9XX Engine...

I have a good 5 cylinder engine and was wondering if they could be enterchanged.

The starter motor is on the other side for the OM603 so you would have to have the transmission from the OM617 for it to fit. There are some other things too, but the starter motor is the biggie.

Contact whunter on this forum; he has a long shopping list of what has to be done. In the long run, it might not be worth it. I inquired once myself.
