Does anyone know what the difference between copper vs aluminum crush washers? On my 83 300DT fuel system, it seems all of the crush washers are aluminum except the one on the lift pump mount and the one under the 14 mm bolt of the fuel pressure relief valve, which are copper.
For the exterior parts Aluminum is just a cheaper substitute for Copper. It may be someone replaced some of the Aluminum ones on your IP.

While we call the Crush Washers that go inside of the Fuel Injection Pumps Copper they may be harder alloy of Copper than a typical Crush washer is.

Did Mercedes use Aluminum crush washers because it is cheaper than copper?

I called the dealer in Seattle and they get $1.90 ea for the "O" rings and $4.40ea for the copper ones. Seems kind of steep plus shipping They work for the "85" 616 & 617 Euro IPs now all I gota do is find them at a decent price
We have them..

All of the ones on my Fuel Injection Pump and Filter are Aluminum. I believe they are the originals; meaning Mercedes did use them.

Copper does cost more so I assume that is the reason Aluminum was used. And, for a one time use there is no decrease in the functional quality of an Aluminum Crush washer.

But, remember the Car was not built with the intent that you would work on it. It was built with the intent that the Dealer would work on it.
If it was at the Dealer and they removed any of the Banjo Fittings that used the Aluminum Crush Washers they would Replace them with new Crush Washers.

We want the Copper Crush Washers because there is a better chance that they can be reused. The Aluminum Crush washers do not have the same reliability if reused that the Copper ones do.

In their Fuel Injection Repair kits Bosch also replaced quite a few of their formally Copper Crush Washers with Aluminum ones.

When you buy a new inline IP from Bosch, are the banjo bolts and crush washers included or are they supplied by Mercedes? I would think cost is not an issue as far as crush washers and aluminum was used because it is better?

Prolly cheaper than the prices thats been quoted. You'll have to try a Diesel Injection Suppliers, --not a diesel-shop--the guys who Supply diesel-shops....

Use the Pump Part-Number--summit like PES 5M 55C RS 320 168--or whatever, and ask for seal service-kit, It'll contain ALL the case and governor seals, the 'O' rings and copper-washers.
--I get all mine from UK Co. called, Help-Today or Merlin Diesel, Complete seal kit usually is only about 12-15 quid....
Quid? how many quid are in a shilling

Internal "Copper" looking Washers, I.P.

Do not assume (without chemical analysis) that what appears to be simple Copper actually is.[Many alloys CAN appear to be Copper]
INTERNAL washers are One Time ONLY usage.[Torquing them distorts]

Bosch

Stevo,

(If no luck elsewhere)

Alastair's advice is the Easiest,Quickest and Least Expensive.

Get the Number from the Metal I.D. Tag on the side of your I.P. and call the
Local Bosch Diesel Injection Pump Service Center.

They can fix you up with any part(s) for your I.P.

[That way you're Guaranteed of correct parts]

Problem resolved, Fastlane has them but they were not listed on the site when I plugged in the P/N, so I should have actually talked to someone there.

Steve,

I hope you don't mind me posting your message:

Quote:
000 074 1759= copper seals OD 13.8mm, ID10.3mm
A 017 997 41 48 ..."O" rings are 19mm OD and are 2mm thick
these are for the the M pump

001 997 3440.. The copper seals for my 79 616, US pump (no "O" rings)= 12.8 ODmm and 9.6 IDmm

Keep in mind I'm no mechanist and use a Harbor Freight caliper
But it might be worth measuring again to compare with mine:

om601 Delivery valve

copper seals are 9.2 mm ID ; 13mm OD

{using a Mitutoyo sliding vernier (unknown calibration)}

In a pinch, I would not hesitate to use om60x seals for the Euro M-pumps.
