1999 E300D transmission problems
I am looking into getting a 99 E300D and I was talking to my friend the other day. He said that they have a torque converter problem. I never heard of this problem before. He said that it is known for the torque converter to fail. Does anyone have any information on this.

Never heard of this problem. And, at the risk of having mine blow up the next time I drive it, I haven't had transmission problems of any sort... (ducks for cover)

Aparently my friend had a problem and got rid of the car because of it. He told me that he started having transmission problems and when he took it to the shop they told him it was a common problem on that type of transmission. When he explained the problem to the mechanic the reaction was instant that the torque converter was the problem. He is not very good with mechanics and does not have further information, but said there is a problem. He mentioned something about chips of metal flaking off and causing problems.

Never have had a problem with my current bought new '99 300 ETD, (122K) miles, nor my '83 300 SD (305K) miles.
My folks bought and owned three MB AutoTtrans. diesels in the '60s-'70s and never had a problem either. Put always 175K miles on 'em, and 400K or so on the last one a '77 240D. I wonder if people that have problems with them are beating them to death, then complain that they didn't hold up. Everything has a breaking point if misused.
