if it's anything like the .951 and .952 blocks, in the 617, then the difference is likely in the manifolds or the motor mount arms or something else altogether.
something to do with which vehicle the motor resides in.

As usual for questions of this type, EPC is your best friend.

OM603.960 was installed in the 1987 300D Turbo (model 124.133 sedan and 124.193 T-sedan).
OM603.961 was installed in the [1986?] 300SDL (model 126.125).

The only difference I can think of is the pump for the SLS and that is not part of the block.

It's the assembly, not the block.

The turbo on my 961 didn't have an ARV for some reason.

The mount arms are different but they're easily swapped. The oil cooler fittings might be in different positions on the oil filter housing. I don't know if you have to replace the entire filter housing or just the shaft and lid when swapping a .961 into a 124.

[edit] Throttle linkage by the cruise actuator might be different as well since the .960 has a throttle cable and the .961 has a torsional throttle link.

aaa, AFAIK, Federal 86 SDLs didn't come with ARV.
