Converting 240D 4 speed to 617 Turbo
Hey, we are moving along at a snails pace, but we are getting there. I just couldn't get much done in the heat of summer. Bus driving ended first of June and summer crashed in on us and never gave us a break until late October. Well, yesterday I took it down from the jack stands that it has been on since about 4th of July. I have the bottom side done except for perhaps a final adjustment on the shortened shift rods. I put the 85 300D RA in it, had the drive line shortened by a school shop lab in Alabama, got a like new exhaust from Jim Harris in Boonville and a lot of little stuff. So now all that remains is up front and on top and if Merry Christmas weather is good I could accomplish some work. I turned 78 about the 4th of July and I find energy hard to find at times. I have three gauges installed in the ashtray area, ammeter, oil pressure and boost. Have to hook them up and of course everything else under the hood still has to be hooked up. The only thing I have to work out for small parts is the heater/coolant outlet from the engine to the tube nearest the brake booster. The 617 turbo has that exit port on the left side of the head in the fourth of the five plugs and that is right behind the IP. With a big wrench those plugs can be turned out and I think it would be worth it to get a plug that is a little more accessable. When I took it down yesterday it was pretty dirt, dusty and generally not real nice, so I gave it a good wash and it is so beautiful. The paint was put on in 1998 I think and Nathan Carter only put 8,000 or so miles on it. When I got it all the trim was off, but I finally have all that on also. Lower back enclosed ends of the front fenders did have rust on both side which he patched with a very poor welding job. Inside that fender area it looks awful, but if I keep the fenders on tight, no one can see it. He even patched over the three holes for the trim which were very hard to place correct. To make it easier I went with only two holes each side. Car has had sheepskins on it from new and the interior is beautiful. The AC needed a lot of work and I eliminated that. And while it was out I snapped some pictures. I thought I better figure out how to send pictures. The weather was warm at 55 F and the sun and sky were so beautiful, but I just can't get nice pictures like many of you can. Well, now it is inside until Spring Break, the first week of April. That is when I started last spring. I do have a low mileage 240D block for very cheap if you can come and pick it up.
