I have visited that Island. Its an old military base right? The old road on the right is abandoned except for getting to the island and fishing, right? There is a diner at the base where you enter to go to the island, right?

t walgamuth is correct, they do bolt together.

I still do not understand how one could easily get the radiator mounted without the cooler. When the two are bolted together, they slide into the opening against rubber shims, one shim on each side of the opening. On the right side of the radiator and left side of the cooler there's a long "bump" which keys into the rubber shim that holds the radiator vertical, then the rubber donuts mentioned by 79Mercy hold the radiator down into those shims.

In the parts book, I see 115 504 00 84 described as "filler". Maybe that's what is needed to fill the space if the oil cooler is omitted. Regardless, I've never seen a filler, only the coolers.

So my question remains, is there really a cooler missing in this case? How is the radiator mounted without a cooler, a filler? And if a cooler is needed, I'll be happy to unbolt one from a radiator, just PM me. However, I would think it would be on any car in a junk yard locally, all the ones I know of here still have theirs.

I would probably forget about the oil cooler or just change out the rad and oil filter toghether. You will end up spending $500 if you buy new hoses etc. You really don't need the oil cooler unless you are planning long road trips in the summer.

thanks for all the input, i want to see how the engine is running, the oil cooler is still mounted next to the RAD, just disconnected. a local garage had the hose in stock, when we connected it, the cooler was leaking... this is why the RAD is still mounted... i do plan on doing some trips to PA with this car in summers. how much does an oil cooler really help? my assumption is if the engineers put this on, it should need it...right?

well, lower oil temps equal lower operating temps. less work for the radiator to do. so a good thing.

I'd just pull the cooler and have repaired, they seem pretty sturdy - it must have stone damage. Or is it coming apart like the water radiators do? I've never seen a cooler leak.

The oil in these engines works very hard IMHO, the filter system is horrible and the engine produces a lot of soot. Plus new oils do not have as much anti friction additives as before, and these old engines need all they can get (change the oil often). It's probably best to run it as cool as possible. And for sure, apply new hoses. A look at other members' messages on this forum with their broken oil cooler hoses convinced me to change out mine. At 37 years, they were stiff, but not leaking.

my local mechanic said he could get a cooler for $130, hoses and fittings would be 40, im assuming thatd be without labor, i need to call him tomorrow....

also, a friend of mine worked as a field tech for mercedes, he told me the coolers from a 68-72 280 SE(L) would fit as well, also ones from a 74-76 240d. so that helps me with my junkyard searches. does anyone on here have a cooler from one fo those models?

the 170 plus labor doesnt seem expensive. but so far since i bought the car yesterday i found out it needs this cooler job

speedometer cable thats 70
the 2 windshield seals replaced that costs 150 plus seals.
and maybe an alternator thats around 100.
