97 E300D with ABS and ETS lights and error messages on dashboard
My 1997 E300D had its ABS and ETS light come on today. It also showed this as a message on the dashboard. However the car is not running any differently. I have heard others that had this issue that their car went into limp mode. Again my car is running and acting normal and when I hooked my scanner no OBII codes were uncovered. This lack of codes baffles me and I was hoping someone could provide me some insight. Thanks again.

Do a voltage check for the whole cycle: battery, starter, alternator.
Some places do this for free and give you a printout. ... in an effort to determine if you need to buy a new battery.

Over-voltage protection relay / fuse in the relay, has shown similar symptoms before.

Not sure what do you mean or what to do with that information. Could you elaborate? Thanks

Does your cruise control work since the ABS & ETS lights came on? If not the problem could be the brake light switch, even if the brake lights work. I hope that is your problem as the switch is only about $20.

No my cruise is out also. So is this switch located at the top of the brake pedal?
Thanks for the help. |

Yes, it is at the top of the brake pedal. I recently had an indi. install one for me. However I now know I could have done it myself if I could have figured out what was wrong. I have read that one should only get a Mercedes switch as some aftermarket switches do not work properly. Look around in stickies. There should be instructions for the replacement of the switch.

The W210 does not have an OVP relay but it does have a K40 relay in the engine compartment that serves much the same function. It is located in the black box on the right side, behind the air cleaner.
By all means check the brake light switch first, it's a lot less expensive than K40!

Thanks guys, it was the brake switch. Everything is working fine now. I live this site, there are so many knowlegable people that contribute and it seems I have been able to find an answer for any Mercedes problem I have had so far.
In five years the price of this switch has gone from $14 to $26 with tax. Now thats inflation, the dealers sure make it a given that they will always profit nicely with any OEM parts sold through them. |

Anyone who has unique replacement parts prices them at "whatever the traffic will bear." As the models that the parts fit get older, the prices go up accordingly. OTOH, not every manufacturer still supports 25+ year old cars. Most cars that old, you're stuck with aftermarket suppliers or the junkyard. Perhaps we should consider ourselves lucky.
