97 E300 Injection Pump

Well I finally got all the parts and tools needed to replace the injection pump on my 97 E300. I plan to tackle the job in the morning; I will post pics of the procedure as I do the job. The only item I am not equipped to do is verify start of delivery which I have discovered is the base timing. I expect as long as I have the engine at the documented 14.5 degrees after top dead centered and the injection pump locked with the appropriate tool the timing will be at the afore mentioned timing so the car will start and run properly. I plan to take it to my indy shop and have start of delivery verified. Wish me luck!!!!! Any tips will be accepted with gratitude.

After a couple set backs the 97 is up and running. The IP I purchased came with what was supposed to be a new fuel shut off valve; as soon as I started spinning the engine over to prime everything I noticed a fuel leak. After confirming I had all the lines on properly I cleaned everything again and found the fuel shut off leaking. I will be having a conversation with my parts guys. Then the new gasket for the vacum pump was wrong; shame on me for not checking fit closer. I should have caught that before I put the vac pump back on man that thing can leak some oil in a hurry! After clearing all that up and clearing the air from the system it started and after a few seconds cleared up nicely. I took it for a five or six mile run to check things out it runs great it is a little noisier at idle than before though. Idle is very smooth and acceleration is what it has always been. I plan to try to locate a time device to check that just to make sure I have it where it is supposed to be.

I must say this job reminded me why I moved into management from daily wrench turning! all in all not a bad job for those that are accomplished techs. I do have pics and may post them later this week.

Wow that would be great I will PM you this week about the particulars. I have the tools to do an IP on a 606 if your in need. I printed the procedure to replace the IP on the 97 from startekinfo.com. When I need specific information I pay for 24hr access, enter my VIN number and get whatever I need. This site is supposed to be available to all MB owners.

Larry I just sold my 96 to another Peach Parts member; they are very reliable except for some minor electrical gremlins. If you have particular questions give me a shout I have dealt with many of the common issues with that year model car and could probably assist without the need for a CD. As I posted earlier the STARtekinfo site is invaluable.
