How to remove belts on euro 300d?
I am working on a 1979 300D that I believe is a 'euro' model. It has the smaller euro bumpers anyway.
I need replace the alternator belt which appears to necessitate that the other belts come off. The info I have found searching is all for w123's that have the A/C compressor on the drivers side of the car. This car (and also my 78 240d) have the A/C compressor on the passenger side. I believe it is called the "york" compressor. I'm not immediately seeing how to go about getting the Alternator belt on this car and am wondering if anyone could point me to some info. Also, the alternator belt looks to be a 10mm belt rather than the 13mm belts the rest of the car has. Does that sound correct? thanks |

Is the car turbocharged or not? If it is not then I believe it would be euro. If the alternator has two belts (which I would expect if it is turboed) then they will be the narrower belt, I believe.
The ac belt may be adjustable by an idler pulley or by an adjustment on the ac mount bracket. Some of the york compressors bolt directly to the engine with no adjutment so these must have an adjustable idler pulley (not 100% sure again) but you should be able to look and figure out which set up you have.

An image always helps me. Here is a pic of the engine from my 77 300D NA. It's been two years since I had this car, but IIRC the idle pulley and AC compressor are on the same bracket. I can't remember where the adjustment is for the compressor. The compressor is mounted to the bracket so there is not adjustment there.

if it's a euro, it likely has aftermarket a/c installed. it's possible you have the only one of it's kind...
that said, if it is a york, follow the belt. the belt will wrap around the compressor pulley, and the crank pulley. if it goes over any other pulley, that is the adjuster. loosen the bolt in the center of that pulley and the belt will loosen.
