With the engine off, remove the U-tube and check the shaft for play and freedom. I'm guessing the clicking and oil usage are caused by bad turbo bearings and seals.

Don't just change filters
Franchiser25: I haven't seen anyone else mention it here, so I will... if your diesel fuel is dirty enough to clog the filter, it is probably dirty enough to clog the NEW filter in short order. You should probably start thinking about taking steps to address the root of the problem, which is that your fuel system and tank have become a breeding ground for the little critters that live at the interface of moisture and fuel. Many folks report good results with the Startron brand of fuel additives; you can probably find the tank cleaner or the diesel additive at a local marine shop (apparently it's a common problem in marine diesel applications, even more so than on old Mercedes diesels).
Good luck, Kurt

Also keep in mind if you fueled the car only shortly before the trouble. Also take off the fuel cap and smell for any presence of gasoline. I suspect you would have noticed it when you filter changed if it was present.
With diesel I am always fussy where I fuel my cars. This time of year in certain locations slow selling fuel vendors may still have summer fuel on hand and it can jell. Where are you in north america? |

I always just loosen the big nut at the top of the secondary spin on filter and then spin the old one off. Screw the new filter on just so it touches the gasket. Unscrew your primer and pump your heart out until fuel comes out at the filter. Tighten top nut snug and try to start.
To do easy check of the turbo, take off intake tubing going into front of turbo. Stick your finger in the hole and grab the nut on the impeller shaft. See if the turbo spins with your fingers and if there is any side to side play. Just from your description, I suspect something is up with the timing chain. Check back with your findings with the filter and turbo and report back.

Ya this board is FANTASTIC! Extremly fast replies. Ok so i changed the fuel filters (both). I have a family friend mechanic who coming out to look at it in the next few days. So i got started again. Seems ok but when i rev it, i get that very loud clicking noise. My uncle thinks maybe its a rod. I didnt go drive it for fear it would die again. But the loud clicking/knocking/clapping noise happens right when its ready to shift gears.

You can put the handle of a long screw driver in your ear and put the other end on different parts of the car ie valve cover, PS pump....until you determine the sound source. Harbor Freight sells a stethoscope & now would be a good excuse to add another tool to your box.

i could swear its coming from at the back of the engine. for example. standing infront of the car, looking at the oil cap and go straight back. at the back it seems to have the sound when rev-ing up. someone else suggested no enough oil. on thanksgiving i put 4 quarts. just for a small trip, (keep it full). Saw it was empty sunday. put a GALLON on sunday and it still seems low.

With that kind of oil consumption it is not unlikely that you toasted a rod bearing. Where is the oil going? Is it leaking or burning? That much oil consumption would typically result in some pretty significant smoke.

Unfortunately, that sounds very familiar. Wouldn't be surprised if it dropped a rod bearing and lost the rear seal too.

I'm in the process of replacing an engine that lost a rod bearing.

I was told if that was the issue, consider it DEAD

More than likely if it was losing that much oil it would be very hard to keep up on it. Low oil level=something is toast.
