To simply replace an old battery...........before it fails..........and before the winter arrives............is a very good choice and will likely eliminate any starting problem that might occur, thereby eliminating the need for massive jumper cables. The battery is six years old. Enough said. |

This one from Advance is 3 years free replacement and 84 month (7 year) prorated replacement. I think it's actually a Johnson Controls as well. It's one of those times where even on my income, choosing where I shop and where my money goes is worth paying a little extra for me. I'll go to wal-mart if nobody else is open late at night and I've got a dire need for something but otherwise I try to shop smaller businesses. |

I just got a battery pack at K-Mart for $49 plus tax and it work just fine... If you need more than that, you need a new battery altogether.

I am very suspicious of the Walmart batteries, i have noticed they no longer say "made by Johnson Controls" as the Yellow ones they sold in the past did. The ones i see there now Labeled EverStart Maxx say distributed by Johnson controls.A big difference,i could find no place on the battery where it says where it was made and to make me even more suspicious i have a EverStart Maxx in a little motor scooter that clearly says distributed by Johnson controls made in Taiwan.Makes me wonder, has JC moved their manufacturing to Taiwan or are these just special for Walmart?
The last battery i bought was a Duralast a couple of years ago and its doing fine of course the Florida weather is pretty easy for startig I agree on prefering to do business with local stores but they are getting harder to find all the time and my limited income forces me to consider price more than i like. Don

What is the status of lead acid battery technology?
Lead acid battery technology has not changed for a long time. So it does not matter which vendors you buy your battery, they are all roughly the same and may be made by the same factory. They just put on a different label.
You can always duplicate or triplicate vital components in the car but it is hardly worth the effort. If one is concerned then carry a fully charged jump battery is a good bet in the winter. Another gadget you can install is to put a de-sulphate circuit across the battery. It will extend the battery life with very little investments. Do you need a hefty cable to jump start the car? It would be NICE to have one but it is not absolutely necessary if you have time. If the dead battery is good but is depleted then you can charge it up by revving up the engine on the 'jump' car. Wait 15 minutes and you should be able to start. The problem is that everyone wants to spin the the engine immediately, so a hefty cable is preferable.
