IP linkage adjustment

Greetings,

'90 300D 2.5L turbo though I think my basic question is almost universal.

When the throttle linkage is activated one of the results is a vertical linkage adjacent to the IP (located between the IP and the engine) moves up and down.

I'm assuming that if the throttle linkage is held in the fully open position this up/down linkage I just described should just at the end of its travel.

Currently that is not the case. There may be close to a 0.6 to 0.8 cm of additional travel that would occur if I adjust the various throtlle linkage settings.

Instead of just going ahead and altering my current settings I'd appreciate some advice.

Thanks.

TGD

Some Answers

I'd hoped that someone would say, "do this, than this, than this & you're done."

No such luck.

This is what I've learned. Nearly everyone claims that the Factory Service Manual has the appropriate procedure ....

But, regarding the specific question, "should the IP linkage be at its max at WOT?" all these posts agree ..

All state that the linkage should travel through its full range and that there is often a significant increase in available horsepower once properly adjusted.

Be well.

I haven't responded because I don't know the official method.

However, I have used a very simple method of adjusting the bowden cable to be completely extended at full-throttle without inhibiting said full-throttle travel.

So far in my experience this leaves the Bowden Cable slack at idle, if it didn't then I'd ensure that the cable is slack at idle over having it fully-extende at full-throttle.

As a starting point, this gives you the latest shift-points. If your shift points are later (higher RPM) than you wish, you can simply slacken the Bowden cable to taste.

Bowden Cable

I've been pretty comfortable adjusting the Bowden cable as needed.

It really was the IP linkage at WOT I was most curious about.

Thanks for your input.

Sorry, I misinterpreted.

The "throttle" in the IP is somewhere between opening up for more power, and simply moving the governer up. At 1200rpm, I wouldn't expect any change from 3/4 to full-open. At 4200rpm I'd expect to feel the last 10% of the throttle.

The manual covers this. And thanks for making me look it up for my 603.

I suspect you are entirely correct.
