You need to pull the steering shaft up enough that the coupler clears both. With both bolts off, tap it off the steering shaft.

Got it, thanks...just needed to keep going like you said.
Now to find the 11/32" brake hose. I have the 3/8" bolts as 1980 SD suggested, but the air compressor hose that the guy at the hose/gasket store said should work is too big. Any idea where I can get that, or do you guys recommend doing it the solid way that Dok Bert did? I have no preference other than I generally try to go the easier route. :o |
No, I don't think the solid way is the best idea. Just take your old coupler disassembled to a full service auto parts store and see what they have that fits the holes and the bolts. There is no guarantee the OD of the hose that was recommended earlier will fit the ID of the coupler holes. Just find something reasonably pliable that works- I used fuel line. Anything is better than air.

Got the coupler back on today. The hose I had worked perfectly, such a tight fit I had to "screw" the bolt through it. Got the nuts tack welded on there...and best of all, only took me twice to get the steering wheel lined up. Well, it's not perfect, but it's such a slight tilt I don't think I'll notice.
Best of all, the knocking noise is GONE!!! Thank you all so much! Another successful DIY project from the peach parts forum. Cheers to all. |
3 years and still dead quiet...

Simply remove 2 bolts from the steering gear and allow it to slip forward/downward enough to disengage from the coupler. |
