Quick 95 W124 E300D OM606 Purge Question

I'm getting ready to do a purge this weekend (knocking and spewing blue smoke at 1500 RPM and at idle in the cold) and I've read about every thread on this board about it. I haven't been able to find a picture of a 606 engine with the purge lines hooked up and I'm curious if the attached picture is correct.

Purge input to the pre-filter, purge output to the large black connection on main filter housing? Is this correct?

Thanks in advance!

Well, that would work, in theory, if you could get it hooked up such that you weren't sucking air into the system. Let's back up a minute though . . . perhaps it makes more sense to discuss possible causes of the problem here; I'm not convinced that purge is going to cure your problem.

So, it's cold and a little smoke is not entirely unusual - usually just white though. Additionally, a bad glow plug could cause the problem. Is it harder to start now that it's cold? If the plugs haven't been changed before, you may very well be looking at one or two going bad.

If the smoke is clearly blue, then it makes one think that it might be burning oil - is there any oil consumption going on?

Tank, thanks for the reply. It starts right up, no hesitation at all 1 or 2 seconds of crank time. The smoke is thick enough to make me a bit embarrased to be driving it but it only smokes realy heavy after starting and if I have it in neutral revved up to 1500RPM. The engine shakes and has a sound like it may be missing... if I get it up to 2000 it's fine.

I agree that there may be a bigger problem here but purging it is quick and easy and as far as I know it hasn't been done on this car and I'm at 215k (I've only had it for about 16k of that). So just to be clear, that is where I would connect the supply/return lines for the purge?

In regards to oil consumption, it's nominal, nothing extreme.

injectors

First, replace fuel filters, and clean tank strainer. Then, replace the injectors and you'll forget all about Diesel Purge. I did. No more shakey shakey idle.

OEM MB injectors for the 606 are not easy to find and if you do find them, they are very expensive. I replaced mine with India rebuilds from United Diesel in Alexandria, VA. I kept my originals in case Bosio ever comes up with a nozzle replacement.

The India rebuilds worked great for a short while before they started making noise at 65mph. They still work great and performance is still greatly improved over the original worn-the-heck-out injectors.

By the way, the trick to using diesel purge on your 95 606 is to buy a separate fuel pipe that goes to the pre-filter. Attach the new pipe to the pre filter like normal and attach vinyl tubing to the other end. Dunk the vinyl tubing into a clear container full of new diesel purge and run a separate piece of vinyl tubing out of the overflow connection and back into the overflow container. Fill new fuel filter with diesel purge, button it all back up and be on your way. It will be a lot quieter...temporarily though. Your problem, based on mileage is injector wear. Sorry man.

The thing about DP is it WILL improve running AS LONG AS it's still in the system. If by 'knocking' you mean what is called 'nailing' (in the diesel world) associated with smoke, above idle but not at highway RPM, it very likely time for an injector test and service.

GOOD NEWS: The OM606 injectors have the SD 310 nozzles that were a quantum leap in consistency, reliability and service life. As long as they're not damaged they can be cleaned and put back into service.

BAD NEWS: They're what's called an 'orphan design' meaning not many were made. Direct injection was coming on the market at the same time OM 606 was still being produced. The only option when new nozzles are needed is Bosch from India. They are not as tolerant with WVO as other designs and I've seen several of them ruined by WVO. There are no nozzles interchangeable with them.

To service them properly they must come out, be disassembled, cleaned, pop tested and shimmed to the correct pressure(s). Shims, heat shields and braided fuel return line are all still available. I am still talking to a few parts makers in Germany to try and get reasonably priced nozzles but it's difficult to find enough demand for 5000+ pieces.

How much did you pay for those Indians rebuilds? and where can I get them?

Your purge connections are correct.

Always retain fuel line #32 (Fuel Thermo to Pre-Filter) when replacing them on a 606. Snipping the old one in half and then connecting some additional tubing to it makes purging quick and easy.

Guessing you'll find inj's aren't your problem.
