Say someone turned an OM617 counter clockwise doing a valve adjustment. What should be done if they attempt to turn it clockwise and feel resistence?

I do not believe the 617 timing area has a cover that is removable... IIRC it's all cast into the block.

Unless the glow plugs are out you will feel a good amount of resistanc eas your build compression.

Try turning it over by hand from the crank in the correct direction. You will KNOW if something is crashing.

What if there was much resistance. What would need to be done to make it right again?

Check your timing marks on the cam vs on the crank. If you wanted to go all-out on it we can walk you through. (Reader's digest version: Pulling tensioner, zip tie the chain to cam sprocket, unbolt the cam sprocket, turn it over until you're timed, reassemble.) $20 in parts or so, the timing tensioner is the most frustrating.

I've had good luck pulling the valve cover and working it forward/backward.
