I usually don`t really see any smoke pouring out the back, except in the headlights at night. I think where I got called in was, I was on my way home from a hard day working at PNP. it was around 5:30 to 6pm and everyone is in a hurry trying to get home. i`ve got my load of goodies and tools etc, Iam giving her all she`s got to give. That last mile up HWY 17 to Santa Cruz really gets steep, and Iam at that point in 3rd gear winding her out. so sure I might be smoking out some organic in His/Her Prius .

The SF Bay Area and the LA area are 2 places that are touchy about about emissions. I think most areas where there are large groups of people, things get crappy. then most things in Calif are Crappy.

I wonder if they gave the prius hippie a ticket for using their cell phone while driving?
You probably upset their bong.

When I came blowing by in the fast lane at 65, in that Jeep diesel, it so irritated him that he flipped on his high beams on me, and left them on until I was out of range - the equivalent of flipping me the middle finger.

Coasting down the 5 mile grade on the east side at 50 to 55 mph, about a 1/3 of the way down, here comes that same Prius blowing by me like I'm standing still, his brake lights going on and off like he's sending Morse code trying to hold that car on the road, before he disappeared out of sight.

After getting off the grade, about 5 miles down the road, who do I see pulled off the side of the road broken down? Yep.

My thoughts as I drove past the guy - "Dude, if you can't drive any better than that, and won't treat your car any better than that, I'm GLAD you're driving a hybrid and not a diesel!
"
Gezz, The least you could have done was stopped & asked him if he was ok (you knew he wasnt! ).
You could have given him a dose of smug followed by a dose of smog as you drove off !!
After all we all know in here "soot happens" !!

I think the LAPD is just money hungry. My father in law got a fix it ticket for a tail light being out a couple of months ago. He had to pay to have it checked plus pay for the friggen ticket. You can have a tail light go out with out even knowing it. Getting a fix it ticket for something like that is got to be just some of the biggest bunch of BS you could imagine.
I used to have all kinds of fun with prius owners. Last year when I still had my Cummins powered Dodge, I would smoke those ba$tards every chance I could get. I had a switch that would lock the torque converter and put the transmission into O/D when you flipped it. In most cases, depending on speed, that would end up lugging the engine, therefore causing tremendous amounts of black smoke with the application of the go-pedal. I was able to belch out enough black smoke that I could no longer see them in my mirrors. I loved it.
I hate prius owners if you can't tell already.

I got a notice when I was driving the 240D with a blown vaccum diaphragm, anytime the manifold was pulling vaccum above a certain threshold it would pull engine oil into the intake and it would create a nasty blue fog everywhere.

I fixed it fast not because of the notice, I don't care...but because it was wastefully eating my crankcase oil and didn't have any vacuum to stop!

Smog Check

When I lived in Colorado my 20 year old 300D N/A with over 300,000 Mi easily passed thier emission test without any preparation.

It was a simple opitical test for emission at idle and at ~2,500 RPM while sitting still.

Why would you actively target and obstruct the view of a specific type of car (and thus the people/children/infants inside it) if they have done nothing?

Post Smoke Tickets In Cali

O.K. , it's not just the L.A.P.D. here (I'll get back to them in a minute)

A while ago , the CHP got a bug up it's butt and parked a couple Squad Cars at the entrance to Scholl Canyon Landfill where (at that time) ALL City owned garbage trucks are required to dump their loads ~ they stopped each and every incoming truck and ticketed then RED TAGGED then so they weren't allowed to go unload before going to the shop for repairs ~ this is in violation of Federal law but tough tooties , they did it and The City had to pay for the tickets in addition to towing them (costs more when loaded , + more because loaded with garbage) not to mention sending out the injection pumps for rebuilding..... a serious wa$te of Taxpayers funds but they didn't care nor listen to reason .

FWIW , I work for L.A.P.D. Motor Transport Division and no , we don't have
' quotas ' , they're allowed to write as many tickets as they want these days .

' quotas ' is and has always been , the excuse of choice for careless & unsafe drivers who do stupid shyte that attracts the attention of the Gendarms , what do you expect them to do ? . smile & wave ? .

I speed all the time , when it is safe to do so not in traffic , not near schools , kids etc. .

FWIW , the L.A.P.D. is and has been for many years now , seriously under funded , this means getting a pen is a problem .

You may live in rich Cracker Town , me , I live in south Central L.A. and I appreciate the Black & Whites I see driving by .

Yes it is true that all Munincipalities everywhere are tightening up on what they let slide as they simultaniously raise fines or those bullshyte ' user fees '
and ' Court Costs ' ~ what baloney .

So , stop whining and be a better driver ~ it really is that simple .

I only get a ticket every 5 ~ 10 years and I always deserve it , usually for stupid thing like driving on the side walk etc. ,that's juast part & parcel of driving ~ it's not your right to drive , it's a privilage you have to pay for , one way or t'other , don't forget that .

BTW : where's the spell check on this thing ?? .

A couple of years ago I got stopped by a cop. Told me I had a tail light out. Before he could say much, I got out saying "lets have a look", popped the trunk & undid the globe holder. I had a replacement globe in the trunk, so I fixed it. I thanked him for telling me, asked if there was anything else. He looked a bit flabbergasted, I said see you later, got in the car & drove off.
He didnt see the cracked windshield or several other more serious things.

Heh, the last time a cop stopped me about a light being out, I thumped it once with the palm of my hand and it came back on.
After courteously promising to take a closer look at it, he sent me on my way with only the verbal warning to take care of it.

I have NO idea what he was so worried about a light for, on a night where the rain was so heavy that barely after opening the window I was soaking my lap.

My FIL couldn't be a better driver. He's never had a moving violation citation. WTF made him deserve such a BS ticket as a blown bulb? He's a senior citizen that does most of his driving just to and from church. He doesn't need harassing $h!t from some rookie LAPD cop. If I still lived there I would have found a way to get that little $h!t rookie demoted down to a meter maid. I still have connections in the city so I might get around to doing it. I just need my FIL's cooperation.

Talking LOL !

If he has your attitude , he prolly earned the ticket instead of the usual lecture / warning .

You cannot get a Uniform broken down to Meter Maid as they separated Parking Enforcement over 10 years ago , your City Hall connections must be getting rusty .

Some folks just don't get it , I do .

BTW : agreed , Rookies often are hellbent on ' fixing ' all life's ills , one by one .

No he has a very compliant attitude toward those in uniform which is why I don't get why he got the ticket.
My connections probably are a little rusty. I left that $h!t hole over 13 years ago. I could probably find a way to get him shipped off to the worst part of LA then. Then he can enjoy writing all the fix it tickets he wants.

South Central L.A. ,where I live ? .

Send those wet behind the ears Kiddie Cops to " Shootin' Newton " right ? .

It happens , yes .

You're well rid of this place . I came here in Summer of '69 when L.A. was a VERY different (& better !) place but as I came from East Coast shytehole , I still like it here better and will stay until the taxes drive me out .
