1993 300d dash lights

On the W124 1993 300d, are the vent controls supposed to light up? If so how do I take them apart?

Also, my sunroof switch lights, but the switch for the dome light does not. Is that correct?

Thanks so much.

You mean the 5 buttons on the electronic climate control? If so, yes they light up.

My sunroof switch lights up and the dome light control does not. Seems like it should.

Sunroof switch yes (starting '89 I believe)
Dome-light/maplight switch no
Vent wheel yes (all three)

The vents need to be removed to change the bulb. The outer vents pull toward you after releasing four metal tabs (pull the vent gently toward you while prying each metal clip upward/downward (inward) with a pick to release. The bulb socket pulls out from the back-side.

Center vent on early 124s has a phillips screw on the glovebox side, later do not (due to airbag), but need the allen-bolt backed out (center to the right of the wheel) to disconnect it from the vent, then release the clips as in the outer vents. Once removed, there is a door that flips open on the back to allow the bulb and socket to drop out of the back of the vent assembly. DO NOT try to remove the wheel assembly from the vent (one tab top, one bottom), the tabs will likely break (at least the top one) and then the vent will need to be replaced as the wheel assembly will no longer stay in the vent assembly (and acetel does not glue well).

The other light that is often out on these cars is the headlamp-switch legends.
