83 300D Trans Flare, Did I try Everything?
216K miles. I have flaring shifts on 2-3 and 3-4. So far I have re-routed the vac lines bypassing the egr stuff, replaced & adj. the modulator, Trans X, K1 & K2 spring kits, & I have about 12" of vacuum that drops to about 3" to the modulator. The weird things are that when the vacuum is disconnected from the modulator it flares worse, and after 20mins of driving it shifts fine. Is there anything else I haven't tried yet, or is this transmission (and probably the whole car) done for?

When you disconnect the vacuum to the modulator the trans should shift firm.
In fact very firm. Have you tried adjusting the modulator with the vacuum removed?

OK so I finally did some thinking and realized that this whole trans flare thing started around the same time as I adjusted the ALDA. I re-adjusted it about a turn and a half, and the flare seams to have gone away. Power is still not bad, but below what it was with the screw all the way out. My new question is what is affecting the shifts: reduced engine power or does the ALDA tie in with the vacuum control system?

When I disconnect the vac line the shifts, of course, are much more abrupt, with a very firm jolt. This is both for upshifting and downshifting and is worse at the lower RPMs. I believe this is typical. The PO had turned up the mod press to deal with flaring. I've tightened up the vacuum system and no longer have flaring. I'd like to set the mod press and your suggestion makes sense. Thanks. |

It sounds almost like you have some lines mixed up if adjusting the ALDA had an effect on the trans. The line to the ALDA should be only the intake pressure and the trans would be vacuum. There is an extensive write up on adjusting the trans, have you looked through it?
