1982 300CD Turbo, pinion nut socket

any onr know the part number for the pinion nut socket or if there is a harbor freight equivalent? I want to put a differential from a 450sel in my coupe and it has a different kind of nut on the pinion shaft. this one is the round one with 4 gaps instead of the 12 point one.

Answer

I use an air chisel to remove it.

The nut must be replaced with NEW each time, so there is no worry about wrecking the old junk..

naw, just a bigger diff with a 3.06. Im going to install my 5 speed and the 2.47 will be to low a gear. the 2 inch lower pinion completely eliminated all of my vibes so I dont want to put the stock 300CD 3.06 back in.

It has been superseded = why buy the socket $85.00 to use it once.
Re-using a $5.00 nut on a critical stressed pre-load part is not logical.

Sorry I was not clear enough.

The round pinion nut socket with 4 gaps = the nut is discontinued = superseded to the 12 point style.

If you need to re-use the 12 point nut, at least you have the correct tool.

Personally I install a New nut every time for correct pre-load locking.

Sent you a pm. And I'm pretty sure the FSM says the nut is not re-usable.

The reason they recommend not reusing the nut is most replacement nuts have a thread locking compound that a used nut won't and the peened area will be fatigued & not hold if repeened in the same spot. A thin washer behind the nut will change the orientation enough so you get a virgin area to peen and a little Loctite doesn't hurt either if you plan on reusing your nut.
Here's what happens when the nut is reused improperly. This was on the trans output flange & caused the PO to think the trans was shot. The flange pulled out of the trans & the car just wouldn't go any more. $1200 for a rebuild scared him into selling it to me REAL cheap!

the pinion nut is not reusable because it is a misshapen nut, it uses metal stress to lock the nut into it's position. no compound would work once it's loosened, it is not stressed anymore, and will not properly hold the preload. I'm sure Roy can get you the new nut shipped asap... in my car I'd only use new hardware on a pinion!
