Cap on Modulator Valve
I was checking the hose that goes to the vacuum modulator valve and it's not holding vacuum. Also, there is a white plastic cap on the modulator, is the tee handle under this cap? There is a lever molded into the cap. What is that for?

Not a "Lever"
It's the Vacuum Connection Nipple for the Vacuum line from the VCV.
(If the Vacuum line that goes to your VCV [on the driver's side of the I.P.] is not plugged into that nipple, the Modulator isn't getting any "Signal".) [The Modulator's job is Shifting Soft/Hard adjustment.] [The So Called Bowden cable on the opposite side of the Engine/Transmission adjusts the "Shift Points"] VCV setting instructions: file:///E:/W124v4.3.2/W124/w124CD1/Program/Engine/602_603/07.1-1826.pdf [There's a misprint (German/Urdu/Pashtu/Swedish/English translation difficulty) The throttle Linkage has to be extended TO the Full Load Stop when adjusting the VCV, WITHOUT THE ENGINE OPERATING!!!] The "Cap" is depicted in the 2nd pictogram.[It Seals the Modulator ADJ chamber] (It's the little rubber ROUND "Top Hat" right next to your "Lever" in the first pictogram.) And yes the little "T" shaped adjuster for the Modulator is Under the "Cap" In the third pictogram the VCV is # 65

Thanks for the reply. My modulator does not look like that. Mine looks like the attached picture of the newer style, Model B. I fixed the vacuum leak at the modulator. It now holds vacuum. I have adjusted the VCV, WOT with engine off until I feel resistance.
My car is still flaring a little on the 3-4 shift at around 1500 rpm when the vacuum is high. It was also holding on to 3rd gear too long when stuck in stop and go traffic. I backed off the Bowden cable which helped. But, I would like to fim up the shifting just a little to get rid of the flaring. Fastlane has a good picture of the part, but I was not able to attach it. I can see the white plastic cap comes off from the picture. It also looks like there are teeth on the inside of the cap. With the lever molded onto the side of the cap it looks like you could adjust the modulator by turning the white plastic cap. I was afraid of breaking it by trying to pry it off.

The cap for the newer vacuum modulators is a one time use only item. You can adjust the modulator and once you are satisfied with the result, you put the cap on. I forgot which way to decrease vacuum CW or CCW. maybe some in the forum remembers.

Ya,Ya,Ya
Whoa!
'Never seen one like that before... The "Lever" sorta looks like the release lever on the electrical connection seen on the top of the Injection Pump electrical connection...has to be rotated to free the connection for removal. 'Same thing on the Electrical Connection on the driver's side of the 722.418 transmission.(Rotate the connection locking ring to free the connection for removal.) If MY123ca is correct that it's a one time use only... Screw That, get one of the Original ones...This won't be the ONLY time you're in there adjusting. It does kinda look like it was meant to allow adjustment with the lever from the outside.(Only, the Original,"T" shaped adjuster had to be Pulled out slightly to turn the inside shaft.) 'Need advice from Real Expert (MB Doc,Iluvmils,SB,Etc.)

Thanks guys. So, short of finding the old style modulator. I can pry the cap off, right? Is there a position where the cap comes off easier ? Do I put the cap back on just enough to use the teeth inside the cap to turn the tee and then reseat the cap when I'm done? On the Mercedes Source site, it says the the cap is designed to be moved, via the lever, for fine adjustments.
Thanks again. I'd hate to break this thing without having a replacement in hand.

After a liitle more digging, I found the attached. Now I know what My123ca meant by a one time use. If the white plastic cap is removed, it is destroyed and must be replaced. In the world of modulator pressure how much is .2 bar? A lot or a little?
