Hit 300k miles tonight
My 99 E300 turned over 300k tonight on the way home from dinner tonight.
Was hoping to get its 500km badge, but changed jobs last summer and now work from home 3-4 days a week so no longer rack up 6-700 miles a week like I once did. Doubt at this point it will get to 312,500 under my watch. Still a nice car to drive although is slowing down some. Has been a very reliable. Other than replacing wear items (shocks, MM, some bushings, etc), it has had a few fuel leaks that had to be addressed and gotten a new K40 relay, SOV, serp belt damper, alternator and 2 front wheel bearings and new steering knuckle/spindles.

The 606 is one heck of a motor, does it burn any oil? Original tranny?

Very impressive! Are you saying that before it accrues another 12,500 miles you'll be getting rid of it? It certainly sounds like a keeper to me. With 300K, your necessary repairs have been next to nothing.

It uses one qt of oil at the mid point of its typical 16k oil change interval. Inj's have never been out and chain stretch has never been measured. Doing both would prob be appropriate at this point.

16,000 mile OCIs? wow, you sir are a brave man. I'm sure the owners manual says that's the interval but I shorten them up on high miled cars.
Congratulations!

The 606 is much cleaner buring than prior engines. When tested, it's M1 still has over 50% of its TBN remaining and alomst no fuel, soot or metal contaminants present after 16k miles. Blackstone always suggests increasing the interval a few thousand miles.......I suspect we will have to wait another 10 years to learn if 300k is high miles for a typical 606 or not.....I'm guessing that as long as the PCB's and chips can hold up for 10 more years of expansion/contraction cycles that it won't be.

Awesome! Saw a '99 on ebay for sale a while back with 390k in California and seemed just fine.
Being that the 606 is more or less just a twin cam version of the proven 603 they should motor on quite a while with no problems (if you can keep the glow plugs from snapping off in the head!).

I've earned enough money driving my '99 300 ETD on business miles years ago to buy several of them. The engine itself may the bonus of these W210s that a select few say is such a pitiful MB diesel car to own. . . . .although they don't own one! And, no, they don't 'burn oil.' I'll take one of 'em versus any six of the old age Granny MB diesels that can't get out of their own way! Before even looking/reading I'd put money on TMAllison's tranny having worked flawlessly to date....... |

BTW, Terry - I never wasted the time checking my chain stretch on my 16 year old SD with 305K miles on it and of course it's flawless transmission that I would change fluid on every 50K miles & drain the torque converter as well. I love my '99 300 ETD more every day! |

The only thing stopping me from owning a 606 is the chassis its installed in. If I could shove one in a W126 I'd be all over it. Or even better, a G-wagon.
