Alt belt isn't slipping. What kind of alt should I buy?
I bought an Ebay one from a rebuilder in California. Can't remember his name but it worked out fine.

I just put an Ebay 120 amp alternator in. Very happy with the results.

Is this a good Ebay alternator for W123?

Interesting. If it's the alt, why aren't I getting a flickering batt light?

Should it be 14v at fast idle? I can barely get it above 12v no matter how hi I rev it.

The first time it went bad, I was getting the battery light flicker. I took it to Firestone (first mistake) and they replaced the alt and battery to a tune of $800. This was November of 2006.

I had similar issues last year at this time, but I drove it so infrequently that I chocked it up to a dead battery.

Like I wrote earlier, my driving habits have changed. I was driving 100 miles/day interstate (70mph) Now it 28 miles day, mixed hwy and city driving with lights on and heat blasting.

Pull your voltage regulator and check the brushes...

Your alternator is not putting out enough to charge the battery, you should have at least 13.5 volts at fast idle.

However let me ask this first, what kind of glow plugs and relay are in the car? Wondering if the relay is sticking on causing the low voltage..... Just to be sure unplug the GP relay and re-check battery voltages with the motor running.

Good question. It's a great cold-starter (assuming the battery is charged) and has never left me stranded even at -7F. I let it run for about 5 mins and the voltage never got above 12, so this may be the case.

Where is the gp relay?

TIA!

Under the the dash on the drivers side if you still have the stock relay system installed.

Pull the voltage regulator off the alternator and check the brushes.
