1984 300SD block heater
I just finished installing a new block heater. I removed the breather, the breather brackets, and the heat shield bolted to the manifold. It was a two man job, but with a 46mm socket and a long pullhandle it came right out. Just thought I would share this because I was dreading the job.:)

Thanks I will be dreading it shortly, after the weather warms up a little and I get the car indoors. This proves that not all diesels came with block heaters. |
my euro TD did not come with a block heater, nor did several of the cars I have. TOTALLY amazed you got the plug out so easily! Congratulations! I've read on here the thread about the torch and the 6' cheater, and the MASSIVE amount of strength needed to remove these! maybe the 84 used some neversieze or something on them...

My car spent its life in Seattle and did not have the cord attached when I bought it. I removed the black cap and installed the cord. DIY difficulty level 1. One hour tops depending on how many beers you have during the install. Of course YRMV if you are installing it outside in 0 degree temperatures. :D |
My OM603 have a block heater, but it is NOT from the factory, it is retrofitted when the car came to Norway in 1997. Euro spec mercedes never have block heaters from factory that I know of, but the dealers can supply it at extra cost.
Ditch the block heater and install |

Do you know the part number for the block heater?

Item Number MSRP 6062000096 $135.00 |
would be nice.
I have to renew mine, as the crappy, norwegian produced "defa" crap that all Norwegians for some reason think is so great, really isn't that great. |
So this is an original block heater, produced by mercedes-benz?
do you know how many watt? This is probably 110V, so I cannot use it anyway, but maybe there exist a 220V version. |

MB must have made one for Europe that is 240V. They do sell their cars in Scandinavia, correct? |

I've never heard of an original block heater before, but there are lots of things I haven't heard of :-) . In Norway, the dealers fit heaters from the Norwegian company DEFA. The one in my car is 600 watt, and the fan heater inside the car is 2000watt. Still, the 5000 watt webasto diesel heater does a mouch better job. Not all cars have pre heaters installed here. |

Fits Mercedes, probably not original.
I suppose it must be for truck, as the element seem different than the one I have. 1000 watt seems sweet :-) |
