Belt pulley cut into lower radiator hose 1984 300D

I installed both upper and lower radiator hoses a few weeks back. I just installed a new hose from the driver's rear of the block to the heater core hoses and while checking for coolant for leaks with the engine on I just happened to witness what I believe is the alternator pulley break through the lower radiator hose.

It must've been doing that for a few weeks now and I just happened to be down there looking at the right moment.

What I can't figure out is how it happened. I installed the hose just where the old one was and I don't remember seeing any clearance issues with the belt before. So my question is how did this happen? Did I install the hose wrong?

Today everything was closed except for one shop that can get me a hose on Monday. Just trying to set up a game plan until it gets here.

This thread is worthless without pics. About impossible for the lower hose to hit the belts iirc.

#1. The hose install ends where reversed = easy/common mistake.
#2. The engine mounts failed?

On my 1980, I had this start to happen just after I adjusted the fan belt. The belt needed replacing & was on the end of the adjustment.
Easy fix; loosen the bottom clamp & rotate the hose a little.

Now that your hose is ruined, might as well take it off and see if it clears better with the ends switched around.
If so, when it arrives, install the new hose accordingly.
If not, maybe the previous parts-guy sold you the wrong hose.

Happy Motoring, Mark
