Torsion bar bushings

I searched and failed to find the part numbers for torsion bar bushings or the torsion bars themselves. This is for my 84 wagon. The drivers side bushing is clicking, and I ought to do both sides perhaps. Any advice on the job would be appreciated, thanks
William

... we don't have torsion bars in our vehicles...
are you perhaps thinking of guide rod bushings? or perhaps antisway bar bushings?

a torsion bar replaces springs in a vehicle... like a dodge or BIG trucks. our vehicles certainly have springs. and while the antisway bar technically is a torsion bar, it's not listed as such.

Terminology can be confusing, I believe MB uses different terms depending on source.

OP, what car?

If you are refering to the front bar that is under the battery and brake booster, they are a dealer item only. the 300TD bar is 2mm larger than the 300D.

Bushings for the 300D/240D are after market, and are around $3.60 last time I looked, and are available from the buy parts tab above.

The TD bushings are $25.00 each .

Yes it does appear the w123 wagons have a torsion bar. See the twenty hour replacement job of torsion bar- it has a bushing under/behind the brake booster and behind the battery with protective cover. It's a split rubber bushing and it rarely goes bad. I call it a torsion bar, WHunter and his sources call it that and so does my indie who ordered torsion bar bushings, left and right. Well now I get to change them- I'll give a report soon.

The upper control arm bushing is not it. The other link contains no picture, and I saw what they look like today, so I cannot tell if that is the correct part.

Item #8 is part number 123 323 12 85.

Good luck, I understand this can be a difficult replacement.

Yep that's what my indie ordered. I'm going to use a junkyard car to practice before I do it on my car. I did find a few threads on this, but failed to bookmark them. I appears to be a 2 hour job (per side?). I have large but flexible and skinny hands, so I'm going to try and not remove the brake booster.

My humble apologies for the torsion bar naming. I did say that technically the antisway bar is a torsion bar, so I get 1/2 point for that. Glad Whunter is here to correctly find you the parts!
(we all need him for his expertise!)
be sure when you get in there to look over well the bar for signs of rust! if your bushings are shot, you may have rust under them that can snap the bar REQUIRING that 20 hours to change out! I'll be scrapping a pair of 123's soon. lemme know if you need me to ship you one of mine...

I've done this job on my W123 - if I were you I'd save time and just take out the brake booster. Even if your hands fit under the brake booster I guess you'll have trouble getting the old bushings out and the new ones in.

I found it necessary to undo the joint on the upper control arm just to get an extra bit of wiggle (good technical term that).

Good luck

Here are some pictures of the engine bay for you:-

The sedan and the Wagon Sway/Torsion bars are of a different size. the Wagon is 2mm thicker.

The last Post #20 in this thread shows the difference in the size.

Well I do have brake fluid flush on the upcoming maint schedule... Without WHunter we'd all be worse off- his experience is invaluable. BC also, and BB; but he's gone for a bit. VSTech- thanks for becoming the DD mod.

whats wrong with the torsion bar? are the ends broken off due to rust? Fastlane has a kit just replace the tips. I replaced both ends of my 85D.

... I thought just the rear bars were different on the wagon, but it makes no difference, as I'm parting out a wagon too...

The bushing under the booster and behind the battery need to be replaced- I have a occasional high speed shimmy and clicking at low speed- it's the bar hitting metal. Everything else "down under" is new and I have vogtland springs with Bilstein HD's. It's a stiff ride, and I want it stiffer. Soon the myna pump goes on and other goodies. This ain't yo' daddy's wagon.
