300D - pull prechamber just to look at it

I had to rent/buy the tools for pulling/installing prechambers during the rebuild of my 240D engine and was wondering if, while I have the tools, there would be anything that would be gained by pulling the pre-chambers on the 300D just to see what kind of condition they are in. The car runs great, starts right up when cold and is returning appropriate fuel milage. Can you inspect prechambers like you can a spark plug and tell anything about what is going on inside the engine? Do prechambers "wear" out?
thanks

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. In 30+ years of MB Diesels, I never had to replace a pre-chamber. There are no moving parts to wear out and the fuel burning in them them is very rich so there is no excess oxygen to burn them. I would leave them alone.

If I remember right, they were supposed to be replaced every 30,000 miles in a 180D push rod engine, but that was 40 years ago. They have developed new materials since then. How many of you remember the push rod Diesel? It was ar eal power house: 36HP.

I agree with the dodn't fix it if it ain't broke. You may get a lot more than you bargained for. I just pulled one because the seal was leaking and the threads stripped while I was pulling it. Igot it out but it toke some doing. You know the only way to get them out if that happens is to pull the head. nuff siad leave it alone my .02

Engatwork,

Just wondering why your 240D needed an engine rebuild at only 119,000 miles?

PE - read the "Condition of non-running 240D" on the diesel discussion - long story and it ain't over. Just put the cylinder head and chain on today. Hope to get the injection pump and on oil fiter housing on tomorrow. The pita part of these jobs are the o-rings/washers that you alway come up needing before you can preceed. Everything is going well with it and I should be able to put it back in the car over the next week or so.
